rewiring cabs?

So I decided I should try rewiring my cabs. I work at a place that gets tons of cable from monster and well I can get alot of their speaker wires free and im wondering A what gauge I can get up to 2 gauge but OBVIOUSLY that is way too heavy, im thinking around 14 maybe 12 gauge, I use a 6 gauge speaker cable for my 4x10" and a monster performer 500 for my guitar 4x12" so what gauge? And on my 4x10" I could wire it up to be 4 ohms (its currently 8 ohms) and I have a tube head would it be worth it or should I leave it 8 ohms?
 
First of all, what are the ohms rating of the individual speakers in the cab? Changing a 410 cab to 4ohm from 8ohm would require you to have 16ohm speakers in there and wire them in parallel. If they are 8ohm speakers, you're out of luck.
Second, wire it with 12ga wire and you'll be happy. Any bigger than that really isn't necessary unless you're pumping 2000w into it or something.
Honestly, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The time and energy spent retrofitting the wiring in it is going to equate to about nada in actual performance benefit, unless you have like 24ga wire in there, or it's wired improperly.

Most people that ask that question don't know ohms theory.;)

You're going to see the biggest performance improvement by rewiring it to 4ohms, if your head is 4ohm minimum, of course. You'll have full power going to the cab, but you won't be able to add a cab to it if you want to, unless you're 2ohm stable, that's the only real drawback to doing that.
If you want to go to a single cab configuration, by all means, go 4ohm.:D

Four 16 ohm speakers (which you state in a later post) can't be wired to give an overall impedance of 8 ohms.

It would total either 16 ohms (in series-parallel) or 4 ohms (in parallel).

Better check those figures again. It sounds like your speakers are 8 ohms each (or 32 ohms, which I think Ampeg have used in the SVT cabs, if in parallel).

Anyway, I'd leave it alone, wires and all.

If you are using a tube head they usually put out the same power RMS into whatever loads they are rated at. 2,4 and 8 Ohms. This may not be the case in every single situation but It is for a majority of tube amps. So don't worry about rewiring the cab.
Beyond that, using a heavier gauge wire won't improve anything, assuming that your present wire is at least 20 gauge. A heavier gauge would only be of benefit with at least a twenty foot run, and I doubt if your cab is that big. As for claims of the sonic superiority of Monster, it's a crock.
 
If he REALLY knew "ohms theory" as he states . . .

- he would know that the term is IMPEDANCE, not 'ohms theory' . . . and there's nothing theoretical about impedance at all . . .
- he would know that there is no way to rewire an 8 ohm cab for a 4 ohm impedance.

- he wouldn't have had to ask the questions here in the first place.
