Gene Simmons makes a lot more sense to me than some of the other names that have come up.

I'd say that the question asked by the OP was answered the first time McCartney's name was mentioned.

I doubt if he is the richest, but I have to think that Stanley Clarke is doing alright. He sold alot of records over the years, and he has done alot of work scoring soundtracks for movies and television shows. That divorce probably hurt him though. I would also think that Marcus Miller is doing alright. The man co-wrote and produced a bunch of Luther Vandross' best work, and he was consistently platinum for his entire career.I'm sure he got some coin for his work with David Sanborn, and imagine he has some royalties from some major pop hits he had a hand in. His own CDs have worldwide market, and he tours pretty steadily, plus he does soundtrack work also.

yeah. musicians who earn a lot of money are usually the ones that can write a decent tune. studio cats get paid squat compared to that.

But nobody said that. And besides, he may have done other things like songwriting, singing but he is one heck of a bass player who has had a huge influence on bass players since 1964.

Come on. No one does that and makes REAL money. Who wouldn't want to get involved in production? There's so much more out there to music besides solo bass playing... Most famous bass players are producers too.

Victor Wooten makes some money, I'm sure but he's not even on the radar when we're talking about the richest (referring to another poster).

And again if it was about bass playing only, a lot of the super rich wouldn't be so rich

Exactly and I don't see where OP indicates that the wealth had to come strictly from bass playing. He does speculate but I don't see that as criteria for the answering of the thread.
