Rick James and the bass

I thought Rick James billed himself as "Rick James and the Stone City Band", where Oscar Alston played the bass and Rick James played the crack pipe.

I do remember reading somewhere (here?) that Rick could play bass and compose basslines but his technique was rough because bass wasn't his "main" instrument - vocals were. Therefore, his backing band played the music and he simply posed with a bass because the bass guitar is the greatest instrument to ever exist and automatically makes one 10x funkier

May I refer to an earlier discussion on Rick's capability to play Rick or other instruments where there is a quote by Oscar Alston which I think sums quite nicely Rick's talents.
