Does anyone know if there is a pickup maker out there that is, or at least might know how to make a stock looking and as close to stock sounding hi-gain 4003 humbucking pickup? I realize the basic construction of a humbucker makes it almost impossible to recreate the sound of large single coil exactly, but there are some pretty talented pickup makers out there. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I've used them. They sound pretty close generally speaking, but perhaps a bit more refined and hi-fi sounding and not quite as growly as the stock pickups (probably just owing to the fact that the stock pickups are single coil.)

Yeah, I know about these pickups and I guess I am looking for something a little more faithful to the original hi-gains in look and sound. What really got my wheels spinning was the review in BP magazine on the fralin 51 p-bass humbucking pickup. It was pretty stock looking and from what the review said, pretty decent sounding. I was wondering if someone out there was capable of creating something similar, but for the rick. From what I have read the duncans and barts, while decent pickups in their own rights, are not quite what I was envisioning, look or tonewise. I do appreciate the suggestions tho.

The Rickenbacker high gain pickups are single coil ... not humbuckers ... Rickenbacker does make a dual rail humbucker ... the hb-1 ... it is a series humbucker wound to 15k ohms ...

I know a guy in Portugal who can make pickups similar to the ones that Rickenbacker makes.

I understand that the hi-gains are single coils, which I very much enjoy the sound and look of, just not the constant buzzing. I am wondering if there is a humbucking version of these pickups. Think of a stacked jazz bass humbucker that looks stock and retains some of the character of a jazz bass pickup. There's a lot chose from, however there seems to be nothing of the sort for the rick owners, other than the aforementioned options. My feeling is that I am probably going to have to pursue hum reduction elsewhere with this particular bass.
