So, I know the whole "John Hall is strict" ****, but I really want a Ric clone (and not a morphed Fender, if any of you know of my old post). I'm looking for something that has the look down, and can be upgraded with Ric pickups, pickguard, and hardware. I'm after the tone AND sound..

Rickenbacker Clone?

What are you hoping to accomplish with this thread? The situation is still the same. RIC copies are illegal because they infringe on well-defended trademarks. If you want something that looks exactly the same, prepare to get involved in some fishy sales or get a real one.
I feel like to get a halfway decent bass that isn't a Fender or Fender clone you usually end up spending at least $800 in this market. (Yes, I'm quite sure there are exceptions.) I bought my 4001FL for $800 last year, in playing condition, so... maybe it's not worth chasing a copy when you aren't saving that much compared to buying used. There are deals out there if you watch for them.

I wouldn't get a fake. I would either save up or just find a different bass. If you are really desperate, you can buy from a chinese wholesale website. A whole bunch of them have made their way onto ebay and have been reporting em for the last few days.

I don't trust them, but what if I were to get like..a Tuscany bass or something, and mod it?
I wouldn't buy from them either. But if you were that desperate...

From them? Tuscany is a brand of basses and guitars. They do a Ric copy called the Bird (well, its hardly a copy, but its the same shape as a rick)
Well if you want the rickenbacker look and sound, get a rickenbacker. It will take longer to get it, but it will be worth it. Just save up, sell some stuff. You could have one sooner than you think.

Thirty years building/buying/selling/trading basses, here's my take on the whole "buy something that has the look and upgrade" philosophy:
By the time you invest the money, time, and energy to actually land a decent, playable copy and then upgrade it to attempt to match the original in all respects, you will have a financial investment close to the original, and you will still pretty much miss the sound and feel of the original.
At around $1,500.00 for a gently used 4003, I can't understand the desire to circumvent buying the real deal, especially thinking you're going to somehow come out ahead or buck the system or whatever. If you truly like Rics, you will only end up disappointed.
At $1600, I could get a new 4003. I also don't want to have to wait 2+ years for a new one.
You don't have to wait 2+ years. Yes, if you order one directly from RIC it will take a long time to get it. I ordered my Jetglo from Musiciansfriend and got it in 6 days. They have everything except the Midnight Blue is stock, as well as a used Mappleglo, here is the ad to prove it.

Plus, Musiciansfriend and Rickenbacker both have pretty good warrnties, something else to thing about.

Sorry, I forgot they had the huge sale where they had Midnight Blue in stock, and I heard the story of the guy that got 3 Ric's for $900, only $200 more than my Hofner I got 4/5 weeks ago. But yeah, getting $1600 is the problem here, hence why I want(ed) a Ric clone. And at North Coast Music you can get a deal for a new Ric at $1600.
