Rickenbacker copy

Here in the UK it was sometimes easier getting hold of a R type copy than the original. One of the best one's here was the Shaftsbury by Rose Morris IIRC , & only available in a Fireglo colour.

A friend of mine had one back in 1987/88 & it looked the part BUT it led him to save for the original, as the lure of a real RIC 4001 and a second hand price of around £250 was to good to pass up.

Out of curiousity, if an American happened to be in the EU or UK and purchased such a bass, what would the legal implications of bringing it back to America be? Or having a London resident buy one and ship it to the States?

I've never traveld with a bass (outside of Germany) but I think I'd be better to ship it from a London resident. I wouldn't want to risk a law-suite or losing my beloved "Rickenbackerstyle"-Bass...

It's still the same here :rollno: Even though it's hard to get ahold of a copy, it's still WAY easier than finding a Rick. I just can't understand Rickenbacker on that point... I'm not running after them anymore. If they don't wanne sell them here (for normal prices), it's their own fault. I'm staying with my copy.

The finish looks really, really great but the tuners looking over from behind the headstock? :crying:

I have a Ric 4003, but that's because I am now an old fart with the coin to afford it. I would have loved to have one when I was younger, but they were way out of reach. I absolutely do not blame anybody who goes out and buys a copy - I would have if I had been able to find one.

In addition, Rickenbacker can not protect their trademarks outside of the USA, and their appalling lack of availability around the world pretty much ensures that people can and will go for copies (they seem to be a bit better recently).

I'd like a 4005, but there's no chance of that (I saw one for sale at $15,000). If anyone makes a reasonable copy, I'll definitely be interested (that Italia Rimini may be worth a look)

Does anybody now where i could buy a rickenbacker copy in europe?
I saw a shop in paris, about a year ago who had two rickenbacker copies, but in that week i bought an ibanez iceman, so i was out of money
Here are some Ric style bases I had made over seas. There are copies/clones, whatever you like to call them, that are mass produced. You can get them on DH Gate, MadeinChina, etc. I bought one of those back in 2013 and they were crap, in my opinion, ("Basswood", 24 fret, headstock tilt too extreme, etc) I approached the manufacturer of one of those basses and asked them to do a special build for me. They will do this at a $50.00 markup from their standard clones they make. What I got was quite impressive as far as the bass body "itself", that was all I cared about because I knew I was going to replace all the pickups, electronics, bridge, etc. A guy contacted me about these and he just received his clone, "Blue Ric Clone" attached. These are the stock pickups, Bridge that come on them from the factory. He liked the sound as is, so I believe he will not do any modifications to it.
