Rickenbacker feedback problem

I play a ric 4003 with the pickup cover removed. Currently a song my band is playing demanded lots of drive. Everytime when i select that channel i got massive feedback. Does putting back the cover help with feedback? or what else can i do, I'm really not used to playing with distortion but i needed it for the song. FYI, here's my chain:

Ric 4003>boss tuner>mxr envelope>aguilar compressor>vt bass deluxe>amp

The pickup cover is plastic, i'm not sure it helps prevent feedback, but it is a pain to put it back on unless it does help. Just looking to see if some1 had similar experience.

I had the drive set at 3 and character set at noon and it feedback like crazy. This happens in the rehearsal room but not at my home. My band is covering hysteria n it need some serious drive.

I seriously doubt that the pickup cover will affect the feedback at all.

4003 pups are pretty hot single coils which are also pretty sensitive, and I've also noticed that they seem to feedback pretty easily with lots of gain on your overdrive.
I also have my amp's pre set pretty hot, so that's likely contributing to it as well.

so how u deal with the feedback? the classic stay away from amp way?

Replacing the pickup cover is unlikely to help against feedback.

What sort of settings are you using on your VT and amp for overdrive vs. clean? The VT should be capable of a good bit of overdrive while still keeping the level set low enough to avoid feedback (of course that also depends on how loud the rest of your band is).

Are you playing in a very confined space? How close to your speakers are you?

My band is covering Hysteria by Muse for an event. That's why i need lots of drive.I had the drive set at 3 o'clock n character at noon. Yes, we do practice in a confined space. I'm already standing as far as the room alllow me to, only when i dial back the tone knob on my bass then the feedback goes away.

So far it seems like 4003 couldn't be used with more distortion....
