Hmmm....I've owned two tbirds a 76 and a newer one, I am currently using a newer ric 4003. These instruments do two very different things. The tbird has a very lo mid, smooth growl/roar to it, not a lot of note content but very supportive sound. The ric on the other hand is VERY midrange heavy, when you're playing a low F, you can hear it as to more of feeling just a rumble. The ric almost has a "sproing" to it, it's hard to describe, I actually didn't like it at first but I love it now. Both instruments work well with dirt pedals but the ric definitely has more clarity. Most amps have enough eq to deal with these basses sonic shortcomings, i.e not enough bass, or not enough treble, although these seem to be misconceptions, as I have never had to do any extreme eq'ing to get good sounds. I personally lean towards the ric for what you're playing, I think they perform better at the more extreme end of volume/dirt/sludge/noise than the tbird, but really you wouldn't be unhappy with either, hope that helps.
