rickenbacker pickup in a p bass?

My immediate thought would be the neck width/string spacing of the Ric vs P-Bass. Would the strings still be situated above the pickup poles?
No they would overlap and the rick has tighter string spacing like TolerancEJ said.

Yes and no ... The traditional Rick bridge pickup has a big surround. That won't fit, but a Rick pickup without the big surround will fit. You can put in 2 toasters or 2 hb-1 pickups in the correct positions.
As far as I recall, Rickenbacker's bass pickups have the same pole spacing at the bridge and the neck - is this correct? (I could very easily be wrong!
) Rickenbacker insist that this does not matter, but a lot of players would not be comfortable with pole-pieces which were visibly out of line with the strings.Do you happen to know whether they would be in line with the strings on a Precision, Ric5? I have often thought of modding a P-bass in this way myself.

Do you happen to know whether they would be in line with the strings on a Precision, Ric5? I have often thought of modding a P-bass in this way myself.
On a Rickenbacker bass the neck will be wider at the nut narrower at the bridge when compared to a Fender bass. So therefore the string spacing at the bridge will be narrower than a Fender bass. So the poles in a Ric high gain pickup may not line up exactly with the strings but they will be wide enough to function properly. The toaster and hb-1 Rick pickups have no visable pole pieces. The toaster has 6 poles because it is a guitar pickup and the hb-1 has dual rails. Both of those pickups can be installed on a p-bass easily.
Also the Classic Amplification Ric toaster pickups would work well on a p-bass as well.
The locations for putting Ric pickups into your p-bass are :
Neck ... where a 24th fret would be. Locate this by harmonics.
Bridge ... center this pickup on the back edge of the pickguard. There is just barely enough room to fit it in.
If you are off by 1/2" or less it will still work fine.
