Rickenbacker Slap Tone... what?

I was just about to make a thread like this!

I'm a huge Claypool fan, and I've seen Les play his Rick on Gov't Mule's The Deepest End and his new 5 Gallons of Diesel dvd (BADASS). I'm having a Carl Thompson built for me, but it won't be complete for a few years yet. So, I'm looking for a new 4-string that will hold out until my CT is done. I've had a craving for a Rick ever since I saw Les play his. My Ibanez BTB1000 is okay, but the damn thing needs to be setup constantly.

What's the story behind 4003 vs 4001? Is there a big difference in quality?

Sorry for not replying to this before - I forgot!

"No" is the answer to your question, neck pickup is just where it was when I bought the bass (new), never needed to adjust the height.

Glad to see the consensus seems to be that maybe Ricks are okay for slapping after all (with all due respect to those who don't happen to like it). Not saying it's for everyone, just showing that it's got a sound all its own that some of us happen to like.

There, there, now...we have all just heard a very talented guy playing a RIC...I personaly think he kicks a**... keep playing and use his level as your goal....cool?

You can do anything on any bass and make it sound good if you're good enough. Those who say that Rics can get a good slap sound don't have the chops to make it sound good. However, there are certain basses that are more well suited for slap.

I want a ric now.

The RIC, or anything like it has THE BEST slap tone of any widely available bass IMO. It sounds huge, mean, gulpy, and complex.

The only reason they could be a challenge to mix is often to an engineer who is boost- happy. Due to the forward placement of the pickups, the RIC gives a large amount of low frequency information. Wire up a passive bass cut circuit and go single volume, single tone. It's simple and makes the Rickenbacker lead more with the hips rather than the boots.
