The head is rated at 480W @ 4 ohms, the 2x10 is rated at 500W, and the 1x15 is rated at 200W, 400W peak. Both cabs would be 8 ohms.

Since I'm entirely new will this work, or will the speakers be entirely underpowered, or...? Would I need to do the whole "crossover" thing (I don't know what that is)? What does bi-amp mean? Please advise. Thanks.

Get the 700RBII from Invalid Link Removed, The B210 is a good idea, but get an Avatar SB112 instead of the ampeg. Far less weight, and the cabs will fit together better as they are designed to, and you will get great lows from the Sb112. With the $ you will be saving, spend them on the LineX covering. You wont regret it.

+1 on everything here.

Avatar cabs are great, and don't lack low end. I dont recommend the ampeg cab. get another avatar.

I have ordered GK through RMC, and its the best.

GK's bi-amp is a tweeter/woofer arrangement, not a 10/15" arrangement, run the amp full range and daisy chain the cabs. plug in bass, make boomy noises

Thanks, and thanks everybody else.

When you say daisy chain, just to clarify, you mean run a cable to a cabinet, then from that cabinet to the other correct? Would I have to use the 1/4" jacks that way, or speakon or? And would it matter if I go to the 210 or the 112 first?

There are typically a number of ways to do it: two wires out of the head, one to each cab; one wire out of the head to one cab, another wire from that cab to the second cab.

Speakons vs. 1/4" - they serve the same function - no added electrical features. Speakons are the emerging standard and are better. 1/4" has been working fine for most of us for decades.

I'd see what the head provides. If it has Speakons, get the Avatars with Speakons.

The 700rbII has both speakons and 1/4". I run 2 speakons, One to each of my Avatar Cabs. Avatar cabs come w/ 2- 1/4" Jacks, so you can daisy chain them, but you would still need 2- 1/4" cable for 2 cabs. Avatar cabs come w/ 1-speakon jack, so again you need 2 speakon cables, One for each cab, but you will then use both the speakon outputs of the 700RBII. All in all its still the same. A 4 ohm load, either way. I prefer the Speakons. I dont think the sound is any better, but they are extremely safe and " Hip, Slick, and Cool". I bought 2- 6' speakons and shortened them to custom length for my setup. I hate too much cable laying around. It looks very neat from the back( as if anyone would care!)

One more question:

I ended up going with the GK 700RB-II (great price form that website, thanks.) and two Avatar cabinets, both 8 ohm. Their B210 and their SB112.

Now, I've been reading up on this head, and it mentioned something abut speakon cables, both 2 conductor speakon cable and a 4 conductor speakon cable. And then something about horns, tweeters, and woofers. Will I have an issue? I just ordered two generic speakon cables. Are those 2 coductor or 4?

Sorry again for the mostly uninformed questions.

You know what is really great about this forum is that there is a wealth of knowledge within Talk Bass. They helped me tremendously when I was trying to decide what amp and cab to buy. I can't say enough about the Talk Bass community and the willingness to share information.

i seem to remember reading on here about people ordering from avatar and telling dave (?) at avatar that they want to be able to bi-amp them using gk heads and that he was able to wire the speakon jacks to be able to work like gk cabs. i could be completely wrong, but it's worth a shot to shoot him and email and see if he'd do it for you.

if not, then i'd just use the 1/4 jacks on the back of the head and cabs.

i'm going to make an assumption. assuming that the tweeter has it's own "volume" control on the cab here are your options.

here's what happens if you can get dave to wire it like a GK cab and you use the 4 pole speakon cable. you will plug two speakons into the back of your head. one will go to the 2x10 and the other to the 1x12. the "tweeter volume" control will be taken out of the mix. now the tweeter will have it's own amp which has it's volume control on the face of the head. you dial in as much or as little as you want. now the 2x10's and 1x12 have their own amp and it's own volume on the faceplate. this way you could "drive" the 10's and 12 for a little dirt and keep your top end clean. pretty nifty setup.

now if dave can't wire it up for you then your best bet (IMO) is to get 1/4" speaker cables. when you plug them up to the 1/4" outputs you will get your full signal (no splitting with a high frequency amp and low frequency amp) being sent to the the cab. now you have to control how much tweeter you want with the "tweeter volume" control on the back/side of the cab. not a big deal. just that now when you drive your amp you drive both the tweeter and the 10's/12.

hope that makes sense. if not, forgive me. i'm loaded with nyquil and can't think clearly. :D

Thanks, that was extremely helpful. Unfortunately they shipped friday, so I won't be able to have them wired a certain way. I will buy a couple 1/4" cables though. No biggie.

Will the 2 conductor speakons still work fine for general use?

I agree with the RMC audio, that place is awesome for buying GK stuff.

I have the GK-1001 head and a 4ohm Avatar 410, the sound is amazing! Pretty sure two 8ohm cabs will get you 4ohms but not exactly sure. I'd personally go for the Avatar 210 and a 112 but thats just me.
