Rig Options

Hi ... :bassist:

I have been here looking for info in the past, but I finally decided to join the team here at TB. :hyper:

I have some questions concerning the best way to slave the 2 amps I already own and run them w/ the cabinets I have.

Currently I am running a GK700RB into 2/8 Ohm cabs:
--------------------------------------------
GK700RB 380W@4Ohms / 225W@8Ohms
--------------------------------------------
EV 4/10 600W RMS @ 8 Ohms
Ampeg 1/15 450W RMS @ 8 Ohms

I have another Bass Rig and I am wondering how I can combine the two of them for maximum thump:

---------------------------------------------
Peavey T-Max 500W@2Ohms / 350W@4Ohms
---------------------------------------------
Peavey 2/10 175W RMS @ 4 Ohms
Fender 2/15 300W RMS @ 4 Ohms

I have read some about slaving and splitting, Line_In/Line_Out, Effects Send and Returns so I understand a little there and I have some understanding of how some of this should work, but I am unclear on a few things ...

Can you slave a 2 Ohm Minimum Load Amp with a 4 Ohm Minimum Load Amp ?

I have some diagrams drawn up for different configuration ideas, but I am sure there is an optimum way to do this if it were to be done.

If you could bump me in the right direction here I would greatly appreciate it !!!

Thanks,
Achilles

as it sits now the 4x10 and the 1x15 are getting the same power from the head....perhaps a matching 4x10 instead....same with the 2x15 and 2x10....if it was me i would unload the peavey 2x10,and pick up a matching 4x10 instead of the 1x15 and run the 2x15 alone

Thanks Jim, not a bad plan. By the same power you mean I should seperate the Lows from the Highs and use each amp respectively ?

LMAO
You've got to be kidding right ? The setup I have is weak compared to what I am after.
The kind of music we play requires a great deal of bass reinforcement. Biff you may want to wear your catheter bag and/or an adult diaper ...

I do appreciate any and all comments though !!!

Thanks

2x410 8 ohm matching cabs will add up to 4 ohms from the gk,with more speaker area than the current 4x10/1x15....2 cabs of equal impedance will divide the output of an amp equally which should give you more oomph.....
the 2x10 is getting the same as the 2x15 from the other head at 2 ohms.....may be better to run the 2x15 solo from the peavey at 4 ohms....an aby box gives you more options tone wise than slaving from one pre.....if you have pa support why all the stage volume.....it is said that most of the massive stage rigs are dummys these days and the real amp is often a smaller unit

I'd agree, your cab selection is not ideal, to say the least. Especially the 210 on top of the 215. But in any case, my preference for running 2 rigs would be a stereo fx pedal, such as a chorus or delay. Plug bass to fx pedal, and each out to each amps input. Aside from getting maximum tone control (from both amps), you can also get some crazy good effects between the 2 amps. First though, I'd sort out those cabs, and make it make more sense, from that end.

If either amp has a line out, you can either...

A: Run it straight to the second amps input. Each amps tone controls will affect the cabs the amp is hooked to. Allowing you to dial in different tones in each stack....

OR

B: Run it to an effects return, which is typically AFTER the preamp. In this setup, the first amps pre-amp will control the entire rig and the second amp is basically just being used as a power amp.

There's also the option of using an ABY pedal to split the signal to each amp. This would allow you to run different effects chains in each amp and things like that and of course allows for each stack to operate independent of each others tone control which I'd imagine would mean more tonal flexibility.

I really appreciate you guys helping me figure this stuff out. I have been reading threads and as much info as I can wrap my tired brain around. I find it all kind of fascinating and yet it seems to escape my logic from time to time ...

Would this configuration work ?

Thanks for bearing w/ me on this ... :rollno:

why bypass the gk power supply....hardly the results you are looking for.....you have a group of mismatched cabs and you are limited in what you can combine them to do.........

Also, in that diagram, you've got the lowend going to a single 15, and the highs to a 410. The reality is, the low end needs ALOT more juice, and speakers, than the high end does. On GK amps, the highs are actually meant to be sent to a horn, rather than the speakers. I'd still suggest running the 2 amps from an AB/Y, or stereo fx pedal, and more importantly, sort out the cab situation. You could use the 410 and the 215 from the 2 sides of the Peavey, but if the GK has no "other" line out than the balanced XLR, slaving will be a challenge.

Questions:

1) I thought by running the GK output to the Peavey Pwr Amp Input I was using the GK Power Supply and the Peavey?
[I was wrong ]

2) Do I need to go GK EFX Send or Bal. XLR Out to Peavey ?
[EFX Send]

3) Peavey Parallel Speaker Outs and not the X-Over Low/High Outs ?
[X-Over Outs probably a bad idea ...]

4) Are the 4/10 - 8 Ohm and the 1/15 - 8 Ohm really all that mismatched ?
[ ????? ]

*** As it is, I am running the GK w/ the 410 and the 1/15 ~ GK700RB = 380W @ 4 Ohms:
EV 410 (8 Ohm) = 600W RMS/ 900W Program/ 2400W Short Term
Ampeg 1/15 (8 Ohm) = 450W RMS/ 900W Program

I like the idea of the 410 and the 215 on the Peavey (500W @ 2 Ohms) ...

2 Rigs w/ Stereo Effects Pedal - Should get me by for now !
