Does anyone know of exercises that improve the traditional plucking method? I use the first and middle fingers on my right hand. I would like to increase speed and dexterity. Thank you.
The only advice I can give is that old boring word "practice".
My teacher advised me to practice alternating the plucking fingers, even when doing other things. For instance, when watching TV, etc, have your bass strapped on unplugged, and just keep alternating those fingers. Do it slowly at first and gradually build up the speed (this is a golden rule for bass playing in general). After a while, muscle memory will kick in and it will become second nature.
Accuracy trumps speed.
practice slowly, be accurate, and the speed will come as a natural by product.
If you practice the other way around you just get faster being sloppy.
Thank you for the responses. My right hand practice only consists of alternating my fingers in 16th notes from 80 bpm to 120 bpm. I guess that I need to spend more time with this exercise. Thanks again.
