The keyboard player in me geeks out to “What A Feeling” from Flashdance everytime. Those Georgio Moroder keyboard arpeggios and that massive phat sunth pad sound on the chorus, and the huge dripping wet synth bass line- such a soaring jam!
Fame was such a phenomenal hit, it was completely inescapable - and as a little kid, obsessed with NWOBHM, I absolutely detested everything about it... ... Then, against my will, I saw the movie, and I was kind of blown away. Had I been less reactionary, I would have noticed in advance that it was directed by Alan Parker - and he really delivers the goods. It not only looks, and sounds terrific, but it really has a squalid quality about it, the makes the path towards fame seem treacherous, and pretty unappealing (some of the kids, not least Coco, really don't get let off lightly). Irene absolutely stands out, in what is essentially the lead role, amongst an ensemble cast. She's talented, determined, naive, vulnerable, tough - needless to say, I was an instant fan. I was pretty bummed that she wasn't in the TV series, and the role of Coco was re-cast. Then she went on to have another iconic hit, and win an Oscar with the title song for Flashdance. Another terrific looking musical movie, this time directed by Adrian Lyne. There was something in the air in the early 80's; if you wanted a box office smash / pop culture phenomenon, you just need a British TV commercials director, some high key lighting, wetted down streets, and Irene Cara singing the theme song. R.I.P.
Irene Cara could deliver the goods. There could’ve been other things that kept her from staying on top, but talent was not one of them. That girl could sing.
I just played for a production of Fame (the musical) a couple of months back, so I got a deep dive into all the songs. Do it if you have the opportunity; fun show. RIP Irene.
I don't remember the exact details, but I think she basically took "Hollywood" to court over unpaid royalties (can't remember if it was Fame, Flashdance, or both), and she won. She was awarded a couple of million dollars by the court. Unfortunately "Hollywood" resented that, and she was blacklisted.
