Agree what a shock...I followed him for years (including all his Facebook posts) being from the Town of Poughkeepsie/Wappingers Falls, he was one of the local "heros"... A consummate rock bassist having a great career with an impressive recording legacy
The drummer in my band is an old friend of John's and saw him a couple weeks ago at a memorial for someone else, and said he looked like he wasn't doing well. Very sad...I was a fan. RIP.
Definitely an unsung hero in the world of rock as far as bass players are concerned. Solid player. My condolences to his family.

Im sorry to hear this news. I live in Chicago now, but I grew up in Red Hook. I wasn't fortunate enough to know Mr. Regan and I never knew he was from the Hudson Valley, but it's always interesting to hear about rock stars who grew up near me.
Having cut my teeth in Poughkeepsie/Wappingers Falls I agree. John was a local legend. Quite a few of my friends knew him and always spoke so highly of him. He even recently played on a friends YouTube performance. Very sad, tremendous loss. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

John Regan, a master bass player whose resume included stints with Peter Frampton, Ace Frehley, Billy Idol, the Rolling Stones, and David Bowie, died Friday at 71 in New York State. No cause was given.
Wife Cathy Merring-Regan issued a statement, which was shared on Facebook by a family friend.
"It is with the greatest sorrow and sadness that I let you all know John passed away this afternoon," the statement reads. "So many people have posted messages of love and condolences on his phone. I am trying to figure out how to post on any of his [Facebook] pages. I appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. One of his favorite quotes was 'All that you can take with you is that which you've given away. From reading your messages, I know he gave much away and so much love was sent to him. He passed suddenly, but that was his wish."
Peter Frampton posted a salute in a series of tweets.
"There might only be a handful, if that, of people who come into your world and truly enrich your life. I have lost one of my closest buddies. He certainly enriched my life because of the person and the great player he was. John Regan was the best of us," Frampton wrote.
In addition to Frampton, Regan played with on-and-off Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley from 1984 to 1990, recording "Frehley's Comet" (1987); "Second Sighting" (1988); and "Trouble Walkin'" (1989).
He also teamed with David Bowie and Mick Jagger on the 1985 single "Dancing in the Street," and with the Rolling Stones the following year on "Winning Ugly."
In 2014, Regan cofounded the band Four by Fate, which released its debut album "Relentless" two years later.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy, children Christopher and Jeness, and grandchildren.

I remember John from Jr. High and High school. He was affectionately known to his friends as "Skinny Regan" back then. He was always focused on being the best bass player he could be, and had a charisma, that was never overshadowed by the guitarists he worked with. Not a household name, but one of the unsung heroes slugging it out day to day to make a living. Proud to have known him.
This was very sad news indeed and quite honestly had a hard time believing it as the internet being what it is. Met John before a Frampton show years ago with my son and knew of him, Peter and Bob from their days up at North Lake Studios recording there with Joe Renda where I believe he did a bunch of his work with Ace Frehley as well. Ace another local phenomenon who also gained notoriety from driving his DeLorean over 100mph on a 40mph road (Bronx River Pkwy) back in the 70's. John was certainly a very gracious person and we remained online friends for years - he never missed a birthday and always was humble and a true gentleman. I am so sorry for his family and all who knew him close. I never got tired of telling him he had the best live sound of all bass players and hearing him with Peter, Bob Mayo and Chad Cromwell was always a treat. You can still hear that lineup on Frampton's Live in Detroit album. Bob used to play with Rat Race Choir here in Westchester and Peter tapped him and John from our area to be in his band. They were our local guys who made it big and never got tired of hearing them play. They always did it right and got it right! RIP John Regan.
