RIP Rick Anderson of The Tubes

I'm really sad to hear that Rick Anderson of The Tubes passed away yesterday.  Rick has been on my short list of favorite bass players for a very long time, and I had the great fortune to meet him after a show at Daryl's House a few years back. Normally, I do my celebrity worshiping from a distance, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity. I walked up to Rick and told him I was a huge fan of his and he asked me, "Is your name Todd or Toby and do you play bass with a lot of heads behind you?"  I told him my name was Troy, and that, yeah, that's me! He said, "No one plays more Tubes covers than you!"  I couldn't believe it! I was pretty lit and chewed his ear off for a really long time. He was so super nice and really cool. Lynn and I were even in the car, ready to leave, and I said, "I'm going back in to talk to Rick!"  At one point, Prairie Prince walked by and Rick said, "Hey Prairie, this is the guy I was telling you about."  Prairie just looked down at us (he's really tall) like we were both idiots.

So sad to hear this. I loved the Tubes since hearing and seeing the She's a beauty video on MTV when I was 9. I ended up getting some of their albums only to find that they had so many great songs and were very eclectic.

I did this video a few years back. It was pretty risky - playing four songs off of "The Completion Backward Principle" album in one sitting.

Rick was a major favorite of mine, as were all the Tubes. Not an easy thing to keep a band like them from getting away from a rhythm section, but between Rick and Prairie Prince, they kept it super tight. RIP.

If I remember correctly, Rick mostly played a white Yamaha BB Bass and a Fender Jazz.

Sorry to hear this - I have been a Tubes fan since "Now," then discovered their debut album, a favorite, jamming" Up from the Deep" to WPOD, which I played in a band for years.

Gotta put on some tight pop bass ("Sushi Girl") or laid back jazz bass in "Young and Rich," Rick could play it all.

Saw the Tubes for the first of many times back in '78, and that show changed my musical life. RIP, Rick...

In the late 80's I saw the Tubes at a club on Long Island. What I recall about the show was that Rick not only played the Tubes set but the following acts' set as well as they were w/o their bassist that night.
I believe it was Steve Stevens & the Atomic Playboys when they were having their moment?..
