I was watching him do the Fantasia on Lucia di Lammermoor this morning and didn't realize he had died.
That's awful news -- this guy was really was at the upper end of the profession. I can't think of another player who had as much "headroom" in his performances. That is, he never looks taxed, even in the knottiest passages. The only comparison I can make is to Roger Federer in tennis -- I'm not sure he's the best, but he always seemed the most "stylish."
