I took a swing on these from Amazon. At $13, not a terrible risk. I was shopping elixir, and these came up as coated so I bought them. They came in today so I installed on my Spector. They sound pretty nice out of the box, like new nickels should. Plenty bright for coated, feel more like elixirs than DR silver stars. A bit dark in color for nickels, look more like SS to me, but I'll trust them. Really nice packaging, overall a good first impression. Will keep posted as they break in.

Ordered some of the acoustic guitar strings for my wife to try on her beater.

I like the chrome ball ends.

Any clue as to the winding length of these? I'm on my last couple sets of Elixir extra long nickels 45-105 and they've been out of stock for a couple years. I need something with a 38" winding length for my multiscale Kiesel Vanquish 4 string.

I'd be interested in this as well...

@scuzzy, would you be able to measure the length of the E string from where the ball end is seated to the taper (end of full winding) at the tuner end? Thanks kindly.
Certainly!

About 36 1/4". Probably not suitable for most basses over 34" scale. Forgive the nasty thumbnail.... Trying to replace some leaf springs on a truck.

They are definitely Chinese string set. Here's the website. They a lacquered coated strings.

"There are two main types of coating technology on the market today, the American exemplary coating material winding technology and the Chinese lacquer coating technology. The characteristic of the coating is that it is very smooth, which some players like, but some do not like it because it is too smooth. And the biggest disadvantage is the loss of the original softness of the string tone. The biggest advantage of the lacquer technique is that it is more economical, but the strings are not very protective and will only last for a short period."

How do they feel, as in texture ? Smoother than Fender Nickel Plated Steels ?

They are smooth, but I don't have the fender strings to compare.

That website is bad. On another site, it says they are coated in fluorinated polymer. I can't find anything stating it's lacquer or with the description you posted.

Here's the manufacturer's take on what it is & how they do it. I guess if I close my eyes & imagine it, the PU coating is a liquid and then the string is most likely drawn by vacuum to coat the the core, even perhaps the wound construction of the string. The lacquer, that may have been the previous process ? I'm all for a more economical alternative & looking forward to the relatively longer term update for how the strings hold up in more frequent use.

"In the string production process, after years of research and experiment, from nano-coating to PU polymer coating process,to solve the fatal problem of string - oxidation.

In 2020, we introduced the world's leading string lamination process, PVD ion lamination, which physically vaporizes materials into gaseous molecules, atoms, or ions under vacuum conditions and deposits them on the string surface to form a more protective film technology."

I wonder if the process is anything like this ?

I reread the rest of it. The link wasn't bad information, what I cut & pasted was.

"After years of research and experiments, from nano-coating to PU polymer laminating process, to solve the fatal problem of string oxidation, in 2020 Road Dog launched the world's leading string laminating process, namely PVD ionic lamination, under vacuum conditions, using physical methods to vaporize the material into gaseous molecules, atoms or ions, and deposit them on the string surface to form a more protective film technology. Also, a special ratio of trace elements is added to the raw materials, which significantly improves the feel and tone of the strings, making them smoother and more comfortable, keeping their tone for a long time, and largely extending their service life.

There are two main types of coating technology on the market today, the American exemplary coating material winding technology and the Chinese lacquer coating technology. The characteristic of the coating is that it is very smooth, which some players like, but some do not like it because it is too smooth. And the biggest disadvantage is the loss of the original softness of the string tone. The biggest advantage of the lacquer technique is that it is more economical, but the strings are not very protective and will only last for a short period.

The PVD ionic lamination technology developed by ROADDOG is a breakthrough that extends the life of the string and increases its protection, making it more durable than the strings made by the two traditional processes, and at the same time, we have adjusted the smoothness to greatly improve the player's playing experience. This is a breakthrough in the world of lamination technology and opens up a new era in string production technology. ROADDOG has always believed that there is no such thing as a simple thing, but only with the heart of a craftsman, then a simple thing will become very professional.
