Rob Allen Deep 5 (and 4)

Hello all,

I have been drooling over the Rob Allen Deep 5 since I first laid eyes on it!

Rob Allen's website has been teasing us for way too long with his Sound & Video sections where there has yet to be anything from the Deep.

Does anyone have songs, or even simple clips of their Deep? Maybe there are already some around the forum, but I have yet to find any.

Anyone who would be so kind as to share their Deep ear-candy would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

The electronics design of the Deep changed from some of the initial ones - I think he simplified them. I got one of the first ones (I ordered it while he was still figuring it all out), so a sonic comparison of the early ones vs. the later ones may be slightly different.

I love my Deep 4.

Those are great. Having had a Ren 5 it was nice to have it represented too, so that I could see how they all differ in sound.

Out of all the clips you have on there, I am fairly certain that I would have picked the Deep 5 in a blind taste test. It just has that sound out of the box. I am sure I could get a similar sound from the MB2, but I would have to simulated the fullness and rounded edges of the tone with EQ.

Now I really need a Deep 5! Anyone know where I can sell a kidney?

the sound of the deep is close to the MB2 (a bit more sustain, also active eq...which you could probably get as an option).

BTW: my recordings (and "solo" playing) don't do it justice. It has amazing dynamic range; so much, that I end up compressing too much. The EBS is nice but its only a pedal and the built in software compressor in logic is "aaaaack".

When I bought the bass it was (and is still) the most expensive instrument I own, but if i could keep only one bass this would be it.

Thanks. I'm going ot look into them. I'm looking for something that won't constantly 'adjust'the mid and bass knobs on my pre:

But I like that style of stand *way* more than the tall ones that grab the neck, partly because I have a habit of knocking those stands over when I'm on stage...

The Hercules hanging stands are prefect... the bass safely hangs from the top. It's virtually impossible to knock them over, since the hanging body creates a low center of gravity, and you can keep your cable plugged in (even with a straight 1/4" end) for the entire gig for those basses with side mount jacks.

And, in the spirit of the thread, here's my new Mouse... being shipped this week. I loved my MB-5, but wanted to move the tone a little more toward the DBish sound. I also didn't dig the slight neck dive on the MB-5.. just enough to drive me a little nuts. I also found the B string not really 'in the spirit' of the organic, DBish sort of vibe of these instruments... but pure personal taste there. They are ALL great sounding. I was blown away by the DBish 'swell' to the low notes on the Mouse... quite amazing IMO!

My MB2 5er is nicely balanced. It has a decent upright tone, but I'll agree that the Mouse 30 has more fundamental low end. It's really nice.

No, sorry... I meant the MB-2 in 5 string version. Mine had quite a neck dive to it in both standing and sitting position. It had a very lightweight ash body. It played and sounded great though.

Was it an early version or something? Mine has a light body and is still really balanced. I thought he was extremely critical about getting his lumber at very tight tolerances for density.

I got it a few years ago. Again, tone, fit and finish, playability, etc. where awesome. But, if you took your hands off it when standing with a strap, that neck would head South in a big way. It wasn't as bad as the original Alembics or those Big Head Ken Smiths back in the day, but it was on the 'poor' side of balancing in standing position.

I'm quite sensitive to this, so others might not even notice it, and the light weight was very pleasant, so not a big deal.

Wonderful, unique instruments, and probably the best woodwork I've ever seen.

Gotcha. I wasn't doubting you or anything. It's not impossible for something like that to happen. Fortunately, mine balances perfectly, as will your Mouse 30.
