I play alternative, metal, and rock. I want to add some interest to my sound without spending a ton of money. I want something simple and effective. Any suggestions of what to get/not to get are greatly appreciated!

How much is a ton of money, exactly?
In my alt rock band I'll use overdrive most of all. Every now and then some fuzz, distortion, and/or flange. I could never really find anything else that fits with our sound. I've got a new project going but it's more indie so I can add in some of the more experimental stuff. I'd stick stick with Overdrive to start, fuzz next, and then maybe a flanger, but that's just me.

I like the SansAmp DI pedal as an OD. It will straight up scream if you want it, plus the blend knob makes for some very nice control with the EQ. And you can actually use it as a DI too.
