ROCK N ROLL HallOfFame=joke

Heart rocked, by the way. Flava Flav was just annoying. Randy Newman was a hoot. Quincy Jones talked _forever_. John Mayer did a nice job for Albert King, but half the audience still thinks he's a butthead.

I was stoked that they had the original band play, doesn't always happen.

If membership in this so-called "hall of fame" is based on album sales it is absurd to see who has been left out. Here is small list of bands who are not in the HoF and a conservative estimate of their world-wide album sales (in millions) :

Chicago - 100
Deep Purple - 100
Kiss - 100
Foreigner - 80
Journey - 75
The Moody Blues - 70
Jethro Tull - 50
Judas Priest - 50
The Doobie Brothers - 40
Three Dog Night - 40
Boston - 35
Yes - 35
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - 30

If you also consider who has been admitted along with the words "rock and roll" it is just ridiculous.

I know what you mean. Rush certainly don't play black christian spirituals, of which rock and roll was an early descriptor. Nor do they play rhythm and blues aimed at black audiences, which was the next thing that "rock and roll" described. Rush doesn't sound like Bill Haley and His Comets, either.

Yep, Rush is out because they clearly aren't Rock and Roll by the definitions used in the 1930s through the 1950s.

Why is it that between 1969 and 1974, nobody sold more concert tickets or more albums than Three Dog Night. Nobody. But are they in the HOF.....nope. I wish they could put their personal issues aside and regroup for a tour or at least a HOF appearance(while they still can). Cream, Fleetwood Mac, even "all" the Eagles did it and survived.

Three Dog Night was one of the best cover bands around.

I had wondered how Public Enemy, Run-D.M.C., and Grandmaster Flash are in it. It must be the spiritual nature of their music. Thanks for clearing that up.

I hate to break the news, but rap is just as legit as any of the other branches of the Rock & Roll tree.;)
And while I like Eddie Trunk, and he might be a pretty good at metal trivia from the late 70's on, he's not exactly a musicologist. I still remember the blank looks he and the other two gave when Paul Rodgers brought up Paul Kossoff's name on the show.

I don't see rap as being a branch of the R&R tree. I mean, where's the lineage there? I also don't think filling stadiums or selling records is valid criteria either. This year's inductees were chosen by an online pole. So while bands like Rush and Heart get in, ya STILL get crapola like FlavaFlave. Ya put it to a vote and it's still a popularity contest. I'm not surprised though since the terms rock, rocker, and rock&roll are thrown around like dollar bills at a strip club. A lot of people don't honestly know what they mean anymore.

An online poll is as bad as the old men sitting at the round table throwing darts at the next inductee- ever seen the bands that win the online competitions based on "fan" voting?? it's common sense, and the HOF lacks it- "smoke on the water"? Or a public enemy song? Which one did a guitarist learn first? That is all-,

Wow, OP, you're really upset over this, aren't you? First of all, the "Rock n Roll" HOF has NEVER been just about ROCK bands. It is pretty much the modern adult contemporary music HOF. It has always inducted as many pop acts as it has purely rock acts.

And pretty much EVERY HOF takes in new members from several eras every year. The baseball HOF will usually take in a guy from the 40s or 50s, a guy from the 60s or 70s, a guy from the 80s and a guy who may have just retired. They don't just take in the "next in line" most famous and influential players of all time. They spread it around a bit.

The R&RHOF is no different. They will usually go back and grab some fairly obscure 50s or 60s act that may have had one hit (and some I have never even heard to be honest). Then they throw in a hippy icon or maybe a singer songwriter. Then some huge pop star will get the nod, etc. It isn't about just ushering in the next in line in ticket sales and radio play. Some people may have had such a profound influence on the biggest acts of all time that even though they may not be household names they turned the course of music history in a dramatic way.

Whatever. You are way over thinking it. Name one HOF (other than possibly NASCAR and it has only been around for a couple of years) that ONLY puts through the next in line in the pecking order of "most famous".

It really isn't all that complicated at all.

Congrats on having such an amazingly awesome life that THIS is enough to get your panties in a big tight wad.

Just a topic, I'll leave your personal attack on my character alone tho, You don't need to do that man-

I think Pink Floyd , Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Stones sold quite a few records and sold out some huge venues between 69-74. Three Dog night was a great band but I think you are overstating their significance. The majority of their hits were remakes of other peoples material.
