Rock N Roll Saved my soul.

Well I'm 19 and I was really depressed and suicidal and lonely because my dad died and I was dabblin with drugs and such. I was feelin real down until I started to pick up my guitar and unleash my pain. Then I started to play bass again and my depression is eased and I want to live again. Music saved my soul. So did blues. Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Robert Johnson, all those cats helped ease my pain. There may be a day where I don't want to listen to music ever again and I can accept that, but for the time being it saved me and healed me and I feel like a man now. I want to be a rock n roll star. I play bass alot. I've started to play with several other musicians and I'm happy.

Now please don't think of me as an emo. I was slightly emo its true. I was very emotional, but it wasn't false pain. It was real pain. Mother was ill father was dead you know. I never really had that close of a relationship with my family. Except my brother he kind of passed down all these bands to me.

"Now take this. This is Alice in Chains. Listen to this and you will find inner peace young grasshopper."

Hmmm... my advice, I would say, since I'm assuming you're a bit younger again, and I've been through similar, is not to slip back into that kind of depression should you "not make it" (i.e. become a rock star, etc.)

In my time as a musician, I've experienced everything imaginable, except for success... and, for me, that's okay. Not trying to smash dreams, but fame only comes to a few of us. Music will always be there, for us to listen to and play... but it may not pay the bills...

I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm glad to here you kicked your habit... but don't fall back into that should things not turn out as planned. Word.

Yea. You gotta be careful. There are alot of loonies out there. I mean. I don't feel like a silver dollar, but I feel pretty good on most days now. Probably just raging hormone or maybe I'm just a brilliant bass player. I am.

I don't want to make it out like I was a crackhead or anything. I didn't do hard drugs, but you know I would drink and stuff like that a bit too much to the point where it was interfering with school and what not, but now I'm alright. I party when I can, but I really think it was just hormones

I appreciate your advice fame is fame is fame its all the same. As long as I have something to turn to, something to live for I'll be alright.

Hi Ilikejazzbass.

My condolences on the loss of your father, and my congratulations - and personal gratitude (I'm an old guy) - for steering your young life away from self destruction.

There is nothing wrong with having and feeling emotions (it's an indication that you possess compassion & empathy).

You will experience occasional periods of profound depression for the rest of your life. We ALL do. Feeling the lows is part of how we feel the highs.

The important thing is to never lose sight of the big picture when you find yourself confronted by seemingly unbearable situations and feelings. The old saying "this too shall pass" is worth keeping in mind.

Bottom line: your dad and mom didn't give you the gift of life just so you could throw it away. Please honor them by keeping a clear head, staying healthy, and learning as much as you can to prepare yourself for the time when little recipients of your gift of life call you "dad". :)

If you ever feel the need to talk out any problems please post in this thread. There's a lot more to TalkBass than mere basses and amps etc.

Gary
