Rockin' it Old School!

Man..... Boston is now "classic" rock. :scowl:
I so remember Foreplay / Longtime being "Totally Boss" at the skating rink.

Anyway...... this evening I pulled up The CD and have been playing along with "More than a feeling", ....talk about bringing back some memories.

Yes! You also probably remember how the rock critics savaged Boston at the time. Personally, I think Tom Scholz intimidated the hell out them. So, they retaliated by hanging the "computer written rock" label on them.
My brother's got a sweet 70's Les Paul. He's also got a rack rig that can emulate the Marshall/Power Soak sound. Playing some power chords along with a Boston track is a guilty pleasure that still gives me the smiles.

For all the kids: Before there were home video games us old guys would go to places and listen to music and try to talk to girls. One of the great places to do this was a "Skating Rink" where we put on roller skates (think roller blades but the wheels are oriented like a car 2X2). These places usually had Dj's that played something called "Records".

And that being said, Boston rocks....:D

I totally WORE OUT 2 copies of the 1st Boston "record"
AND I also had it on 8-Track, for listening to in my car.

I'm a Funk and R&B player originally from Da Hood!!! I will admit that Boston was the Bomb!!!! They had it all, writing, guitars, solos, voices and excellent harmony. It was "More than a Felling."

Everything before the year 2000 is considered "classic" rock now.

Funny how old age creeps up on you. You are just sittin' there on the front porch listening to the neighbor kids talk about dubstep music as they are cleaning out their dads car to earn some cash for the weekend. They find an old Nirvana CD case and one of them says "Who the hell is Nirvana?" The other one says "I 'unno just some old classic rock band dad listens to." Then you realise Kurt Cobain has been dead since before these kids were born.

Then in your horror and frustration you get up, stand up, and notice for the first time that you automatically pull your pants up over your gut because its comfortable that way and then you hear yourself yell "You kids stay off of my lawn now, y'hear?"

Then you go inside and wonder if those kids see bands like Boston in the same way that you used to see Big Band swing music from the 40's.

Good eye! Riedell boots, plates are Suregrip Invader and wheels are Zingers in all different swirly colors. I bought these on ebay NOS a few years ago when I was still married and my stepkids had a school skate night several times a year at a local rink. I got fed up with the rental skates and bought these for $80. When I was in Jr. High in the late 70's we skated every friday night from 8-midnight and most of my friends had Riedells. I couldn't afford them and the rents wouldn't buy them for me so I actually took my cheap skates and upgraded the wheels to Gazelle's and put white stripes on them with medical tape to make them look like Riedells. 30+ years later and I have the dream skates of my youth! :D

Back to Boston's debut. Tom Sholz is probably a better bass player than he is a guitarist. I loved his tone and his style of playing. Normally, I find guitarist make just so-so bass players but that wouldn't be this guy.
This may have been my first listening experience with a 5-string bass as some of his notes are quite low.

Went roller skating tonight at a local rink that has an 18 and older session on Sunday nights from 9:30 to 2 AM. Talked some friends into going who hadn't skated in years. They were grinning ear to ear and all told me it was the most fun they had in a long time.

Only bad part was the music didn't do it for me. They were playing top 40 and some new school soul stuff that seemed somewhat devoid of soul to me. NO BOSTON, not even any of the Abba and disco I despised in the day but now have nostalgic feelings for. I had a P-Funk CD in the car and almost went out to get it with the idea of trying to bribe them $20 to play it.

During my last visit to Maine I discovered that the roller rink I used to frequent as a kid had closed. I felt as though part of my childhood had been ripped up and thrown away.

That place was one of the first that exposed me to classic rock. AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc. was played almost constantly. Although they did play some Wham every now and then.

Songs from 30, 40, 50 years ago (the 60s, 70s, & 80s) are still widely played and popular. Imagine 30 years ago in 1982 if we played songs that were 30, 40, 50 years old they would have been from the 30s, 40s and 50s. For some reason, the rock & roll era songs seem to have stood the test of time (especially with the baby boomers) better than any other era of music.
