Yup its happened i got a call friday saying theres a 60 gig cap on my internet, and thats i only have 10 left for the rest of the month.

WHAT A JOKE!.

They put their prices up, they put their speeds up, AND THEY CAP the bandwidth. I need a godd service provider ASAP. Anyone know one in Canada (Ontario)/ had experience with this?

Its impossible to monitor the cap. I have a 60gig cap aswell and have about 75gbs in downloads this month. I have sympatico, so it might just be a rogers thing, But they cannot monitor/regulate those caps.

I'm sure that they can monitor the cap. Your internet router has a MAC and IP address. The ISP is using that to send you the information you request from the internet.

Just because they haven't monitored it doesn't mean they can't or won't

I am aware of how MAC and ISP addresses work.

My brother works in a computer tech dept at an office store in town, On staff they have several employees of Bell and Rogers. Coming directly from these computer techs, they have both said that internet providers are not capable of effectively using a cap, becuase they do not have the ability to halt internet use once it hits a certain amount of use. Over a large city that would be a nearly impossible task. they can still monitor it, That part is easy, the hard part is capping gbs use. They use this as an idle threat to pull out more money. I'm running a 60gbs/month service plan, On average I use about 70-85 gbs/month....and I haven't gotten a call from sympatico, nor has my service been cut, nor has my plan started to cost more.

HOnestly i dont even download tonns of movies a month, just streaming everyday but thats FLV, and definitely does not add up to 50 gigs in 2 weeks.

I came across
Acanac.ca
Ill talk to my dad about switching.

the cap isn't used to 'halt' internet use,, the cap is used to CHARGE EXTRA if you go over the cap... just like bell mobility and telus,, they allow so many gig per month INCLUDED in the monthly subscription,,, and YOU PAY for all over that 'cap'..

Well thats what I was thinking

However the fact that they aren't charging you or doing anything about the fact that your downloading more than what your agreement states isn't a bad thing. No ones going to deny the greatness of getting stuff for free.

I can check my total download/upload through Shaw, so I'm sure that they can monitor it as well. My friend had his internet service cut off by Shaw. He called in and they told him it was cut off because he'd exceeded his total transfer allowance. They tried to sell him on a package that allowed for more total transfer, but he didn't want it. They reconnected him and told him how to check his total transfer and to keep it below the cap for both the download and upload. They let him go over for the month without attempting to charge him for it.
