rolling racks

sorry if this is the wrong place to post this it definatly wasnt basses and probably not effects and i put all my amp heads in my case.
ANYWAYS im looking for a 8-space ROLLING rack for my amp heads, power conditioner etc..
skb only makes rolling cases in 2-6 spaces which doesnt make sense because you would think the heavier the case the more you would want it to roll?

if anyone know where i can pick up a 8-space rolling rack let me know..
thankyou

I haven't seen an 8 space rolling rack, but I did recently pick up the SKB case cart from Musiciansfriend. I use that on my heavy 6 space sometimes.

Good luck in your search.

I'd recommend getting a separate rolling cart, and a really sturdy 2" or wider ratchet strap.

I used to put a plywood board on top of my Ampeg 610 (so rubber feet on the plywood locked with the cab's feet cups) and my rack on top of the plywood board (feet on the rack seated into holes I drilled in the plywood) and then wrapped a really heavy duty ratchet strap around the whole damn thing. Under the cab, through the cab's handles, through the rack's handles, cranked it on top. It was so tight I could hold just the amp rack and tilt the whole stack like a fridge dolly.

It's also very easy to go buy 4 good casters and a piece of plywood, and make a rolling cart exactly the size you want. And then cut slots for the ratchet strap to slip through, and you have a hella-sturdy upgrade. But you can undo it if you need for stacking the rack, whereas bolting casters to your rack is a bit more permanent.

Don't have a BP mag with me but in the back of BP in the adds is a small (black/white) add of a company in NY that makes a big variety and reasonably priced. I've had several of their road cases before I went light and portable.

SMHP, are you talking about a 2-space rack with four swivel casters under them, or those rollerblade wheels on the side to tilt it like luggage? Cuz any small rack is handy if they have those skate wheels, but an 8-space certainly needs to have heavier-duty swivel casters instead.

Here's what my brother uses:

I'd recommend wheels 3" or larger, preferably 4". Small wheels don't roll over pavement cracks or door sills very smoothly, and tend to get pinched in large gaps.

ACK! Holy crap on a stick! Don't bother buying squat from Musican's Friend, their casters are horribly overpriced. Even at Sweetwater.

You can go to Great Lakes Caster, and order 12-0312-BPX-S-P01 at $5.66 each, and after shipping is a $28.87 purchase. And that's for precision bearing, non-marking higher quality wheels! Then ANY 24x24 plywood from Home Depot for around $5, and you're done.

Man, doing it yourself is always more affordable...

First, theoretically speaking, I think they probably didn't go with 8+ space tilt rolling cases because of the center of gravity that is likely created with heavy items racked farther and farther from the wheels. Could create too much pressure on the telescopic handle as well as other issues.

I believe that the 8 space and up racks don't have wheels because it'd have so much stuff in it (or so they think) that people would want to roll it with board + casters anyway. The tilt back dolly w/ telescopic handle is more for convenience than practicality.

I know that probably didn't make sense, but I've rolled a 6 space SKB for a few years now. It was great in certain situations. Across a flat piece of ground from point A to point B it was great. But insert any step or steps, stairs, dirt path, or anything but flat ground and it wasn't cool anymore. You would end up putting the retractable handle away, carrying it a little, and then roll it again, and then lifting again, etc. Again, I know I'm probably not explaining it well or clearly, but eventually I didn't find it convenient anymore. And it was heavy!

I recently sold it and went to a regular SKB case with no roll feature. Much lighter. Lifting it on top of cabs that roll or onto a board w/ caster just made it all simpler. I'd feel that way especially for those 8 spacers and up. Guess it just fits my situation better.

No prob, man. You had a good question and a good point / observation about rolling cases. Shoot a pic of your rack and case when you get it together so we can check it out. Best of luck...

One thing I would recommend to be careful with is that the casters have large wheels. A friend of mine has a combined mixer/14-16 space rack with casters. Probably weighs close to 100 lbs. The wheels are not the largest and the rack can easily get stuck in sidewalk cracks, bar doorways with elevated thresholds, & other obstacles.

Pneumatic wheels would be a great option.

I have the Gator and the SKB roller racks. They work as advertised.

STAGG have started to make them as well and I got one. Only problem is the roller mechanism takes up some of the rackspace advertised... 4U rollers end up as 3 and a bit U, 6U is really 5 and a bit, 8 U is really 7 and a bit. They work and are cheaper but watch out for this.

The GATORs and the SKB have a true 4U, 6U, 8U capability, with the rollers collarpsing into the rack into its own 'U".
