Double Bass Romantic Music

The thread about beautiful double bass music got be thinking.

Girls who find out I play bass are always asking me to play something Romantic. To be honest, I don't know anything romantic.

Any suggestions to really knock their skirts off??

There's a lot of music out there that could be considered romantic. Something lyrical and expressive should be easy to find. You could look for something from the romantic era. Robert Schumann wrote some beautiful Romances for oboe that work well on the bass; I'm recording them now to put on my site. Elgar's Salut d'Amour is another obviously romantic classic. Debussy's Beau Soir is dreamy and beautiful. If you want something originally for bass, even some Bottesini could be considered romantic, like the Reverie which is very dreamy and lyrical. The Cavatina from the Deer Hunter by Meyers is also good, and commonly played on bass...so many choices, I'm sure you could find something good to charm the ladies.

Thanks, I am going to look those up. I consider Bottesini's music romantic, but not "romantic" if you know what I mean. I just played Reverie at school for my creative project to get out of actual work . I was also thinking that the second movement of Bottesini No. 1 could fit the bill. Though it sounds more like a lullaby than a piece of love...

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of violin music. These are the same people that can here a bass recording (even in the extra low registers) and think it is a violin.

I'm not sure whether it is my job to help you court that special someone...regardless, Sonata for Violin in A Major by César Franck.

It lies pretty well on the bass.

Play Valentine by Jacob Druckman. I think it's the most romantic work I have ever heard
