Looking to get a rondo fretless bass, seeing as they are dirt cheap, how does it compare to lets say a squier fretless modified that retails at 299?

They're absolute garbage. They're so bad that even the fretless models have sharp fret ends. I hear you can get a nice Chinese "Rickenbacker" for cheap, though. Just like the real thing.

They are a good value. Kind of hit or miss but for the money you really cant go wrong. Be prepared to mod!

I just put an Aguilar OBP-2 in an SX 6-string jazz bass for one of BSD's customers (no, they don't carry SX). Holy moly! That thing sounds enormous. And good, too.

Um, since tonewood doesn't matter but a fender-shaped headstock does, I think that answers your question.
