Roscoe Club

Ah yes, Roscoe is to bass as scotch is to whiskey.
Wouldn't ACG basses be like scotch basses? :D

So things have been a bit up in the air around here (nothing bad, just work nonsense), but I finally got around to switching the bridge on the Red Devil. It does make a difference, both in playability and weight (moreso in playability). So every now and then we should listen to @Joe BassPlayer . My string height still kinda' follows the radius of the fretboard, but not as extreme (I had a few saddles bottomed out on the stock bridge). My 5er still plays great with the stock bridge, so no need to change it. Plus setting intonation with an impatient dog that wants a walk is no fun ;)

A little over a year in with my Century Standard Plus 5, the honeymoon continues.
This is now the standard by which I measure others for design, construction, playability & tone.
Using an open jack w/ an Electrosocket panel kind of says it all.
My Century Standard Plus 5 will always be the gold standard - especially for neck feel. Mine is sitting a bit right now as my needs are more for a jazz tone so I'm using a Sadowsky 5JJ at least for now. I still play my Classic P with the TI flats a lot. I am finally used to the thicker neck of the Sadowsky and at times it feels "right" for the song. I have debated changing the pups and maybe the preamp on my Century 5, but I like the way it sounds, it's just not a sound I am using right now. When I was playing more contemporary /smooth jazz gigs, the Roscoe was THE choice.

I can relate; part of me still yearns for a chunkier neck, 19mm spacing and single coil Js.
But I can't ignore how easy it is to play the Roscoe neck - or how the P pickup on my specimen behaves in a mix.

But don’t you really want the strings to follow the radius of the fretboard, but at certain heights based on string thickness and tension?
You make it sound like I should sent it to NASA for a set up

But yes, I would think so, I just get the neck to the straightness I want and then do each string to where it doesn’t buzz anywhere on the fretboard. Small adjustments so I’m not doing a lot of back and forth.

I got one of those Peterson stroboplus tuners, and I keep catching myself holding my breath while tuning as it’s so sensitive :roflmao:.

I used to prefer a slimmer neck. I played jazz basses for a long time. Such a fast neck. For the last 10-15 years I've been playing 5 string basses - mostly Bartolini soap bar pups. I finally started playing a P bass after I got my Roscoe Classic P a couple years ago from my wife for Christmas. I have grown to really like the 34" scale, 19mm spacing and 1.75" nut on this bass. Probably why the Sadowsky feels ok as it is also 34" scale and 19mm spacing.

That said, the Century 5 neck is the finest, fastest, most comfortable 5 string neck I have played. I may or may not keep the Sadowsky. I am more used to the neck now, and it does have a killer jazz bass sound. For now I will keep it, but I do keep an eye out for a Century 5 with jazz pups. I'd love the jazz 5 sound with the Century 5 neck feel.

Don’t believe that just because you use a Roscoe proprietary bridge with staggered height saddles it’ll automatically follow the radius of the fingerboard. A lot depends on the tolerance of parallelism between the neck pocket and the top surface where the bridge mounts. On many basses I could get the D and A string the heights that I wanted and with the B, E and G string saddle bottomed out those strings were still to high.
My string setups typically follow the fingerboard radius but the E and B are always ~0.01 - 0.015 higher to account for the larger string vibration.

This might fit the bill for me for a Roscoe 5 string jazz with a Century feeling neck.

I just can't afford new Roscoe's any more. I wish I could find a used one. I have the Sadowsky I could sell or whatever, but I'd really like to do it even up for what I have into the Sadowsky. I suppose it's not the end of the world to play a Sadowsky. I mean, it doesn't feel like a Roscoe, and I think they are a bit overpriced for what they are, but it's a solid bass.

$3125 ain’t bad, I think he’s had that one for awhile, plus you could probably trade your Sadowsky in towards it :D

If you want a Roscoe JJ, I could trade you the Red Devil. You’d get an extra string, and could look cool like Jerry ;) (I don’t really want to trade it though)

I did email them asking about it and my Sadowsky.
Yeah, I've been down the 6 string road a few times and it's just not for me.
