Right. That's why I said Century 5 specifically. The Classics also tend to be heavier than I like.

I took the Classic P and the Sadowsky 5JJ to rehearsal last night. Used the P for "Don't Stop Me Now" and the 5JJ for "Let's Go Crazy" and each was great. Roscoe Classic P with TI flats nailed the Queen. I've only seen Prince bass players with jazz basses and the Sadowsky really nailed it, and I'm getting used to the neck, and it's kind of nice that both my P and J have the same spacing and scale length - 19mm and 34". My cover band basses may have been solidified last night.

I get it Steve. I’ve recently seen my preference for bass tone go more towards the sound that I can get from my 4 string Fodera JJ. It’s just a more focused tone. I still totally love the sound of my Roscoe but only use it when I need a low B. Certainly not going trade or sale it but it’s just not my go to sound right now. I guess that it’s true, the only thing certain in life is change.:)

That being said, the more things change the more they stay the same. I suspect that both of us will eventually migrate back to our Roscoe 5’s ;)

I agree with Joe. The Classic I had ( which Joe had also later checked out) was huge and very disappointing. The neck was nothing like a SKB/Century or LG.

Right. I don't think you'll see my Century 5 for sale anytime soon. I do love it, but it just isn't the tone I need these days. When I first got it - or any of my past Roscoe basses, I was playing a lot of contemporary/smooth jazz. Jimmy Haslip was a big influence and we did some Yellowjackets tunes. Of course a Roscoe worked great for that. Not sure if that type of gig will return or not. We'll see.

Ya'll I have an admission to make...

I purchased this beautiful bass here on the classifieds several months ago - maybe a year now?

And I've been afraid to take it out to rehearsals or gigs because the thing is just so freaking nice I didn't want it to get nicked or dinged.

So she sat in the case for months, and then I got it out and thought about selling it.

But... I said, "why not at least take it to rehearsal to see what she sounds like live?" ... and so I did.

Holy cannoli.

This has been the sound I was looking for the whole time. Clear, punchy, ballsy, fat, beautiful tone coupled with amazing playability... and it's been sitting in its case not gigged the whole time.

I still love my FBasses, but man oh man, this Roscoe is gonna be getting a lot of love from here on out, and I promise it will be at my next gig. :bassist:

I've never understood the mentality of buying an expensive bass only to be afraid of playing it.


This is like buying a fighter jet, but then being afraid of taking it to the skies and bending it around the clouds- or buying a racecar but never exceeding your neighborhood speed limit.


If you're going to buy a Roscoe, you have to play it.

Keith doesn't make bass shaped art that is meant to lock away and look at, he makes basses that are meant to be played!

Actually, I can understand that position. If you mainly play at bars with peanut shells on the floor, or your bass doubles at your gigs as a defensive club or a protective shield from flying beer bottles, then it would be prudent to leave your cherished Roscoe or any +$K bass at home. :D
I don’t take those kind of gigs and every bass I own gets played, some more than others. :thumbsup: But I do understand the concern and protective position to leave pricey gear at home for your private enjoyment.

I was wondering if this post was gonna end with 'it is going up for sale' so I might buy it! Glad to hear you like it so much...that's a year you'll never have back, though! ;)

What kind of top is that? It's got an interesting grain pattern and provides a nice transition between the BEM board and swamp ash body.
