Roscoe Club

Wish I could record and post some clips, but I'm technology-challenged. :help:
The bass is more like a traditional J-style than I expected, as far as range of tones with the pickups being closer together. The "neck" pickup has real depth. And the mid control is like turbo-boost. The bass sounds great with everything flat, but it's hard not to want to crank those mids, especially in the "up" position. With the pickup placement and woods, I was going for a Warwick Thumb vibe, and I got what I was after.
My next one's gonna be swamp ash with a MM pickup.

I have fallen in love with this bass.... I cannot even begin to say how good it sounds.... it sounds amazing not even plugged in...

Hey Gents,

I've already sent off an email to Keith and Gard about a custom build, through my local dealer, but thought I'd post here as well, for some extra advice.

My current Roscoe, which has served me very well for a few years, is a Spanish Cedar SKB-3005 with Bart/Bart setup. There's nothing wrong with the tone, but I'm after something that's better for slapping, has a tighter bottom-end and probably a bit more open sounding. I was originally looking at an ash bass, but then played a mahogany LG-3005 and was amazed at the slap tone and sweetness of it. It was a Haslip model with the reverse pickups - I loved the low tone, but not the top string tone so much.

Anyway, I'm thinking mahogany is the way to go, a Century Standard shape with maple neck, wenge board, Bart CB pickups, Aggie or Pope pre. Top could be walnut, bubinga, monkey pod, not really sure. Any opinions on that combo? Will it be different enough to my SKB?

Also interested in the Aggie pups and maybe even Nordstrand Big Singles, but I have used CBs before, so know what to expect. Also want coil-switching, that's always fun. :hyper:

Cheers,

EG

I just put Nordstrand Big Singles in my SKB-3005 (ash body/cocobolo top/sapwood wenge board/Aguilar pre) and could not be happier with the results. I don't slap much, but I was also looking for a more open sound than what the Roscoe Barts were giving. The Big Singles delivered and with the Aguilar Pre and ash body, the bass can get an extremely aggressive tone now. Never tried the Bart CBs (I just don't really seem to be much of a Bart fan) so I don't know how they compare. I have read that the Big Splits sound almost identical to the Big Singles and without the worry of single coil hum.

Hopefully my CS+6JJ will sell soon so I can place my order for a Century Standard Plus 5 Fretless JB to pair up with my current 5 stringer.

Already starting to spec out the bass with Gard. Hoping he'll find me a great top to go on the mahogany body.

I haven't routed my pickup cavities yet as I wanted to try one more pickup. I have tried Bartolini JJ, Aguilar JJ, Fralin JJ, Bassline JJ, EMG JJ and Lakland. Well, my last ditch effort, I bought a set of Nordstrand NJ5F from a TBer. Wow, what a great sounding pickup. It has a very old school Fender type tone, a really nice bottom end, highs and a nice mid range with a little bite. My custom Demeter preamp (not a Roscoe/Demeter but one which James added a bass/low mid shift) is a little too clean sounding though the bottom end shakes the floor so I ordered a Aguilar OBP3 from Best Bass Gear as I think this may be the best combination to reduce the highs and add some more mids.

Man, my new Demeter arrived today in its pretty packaging and WOW. What a tone. This is the first Roscoe I've had with a mahogany body that had Barts. The only other one had a Nord/Nord setup that I didn't bond with.. I think it was the preamp more than the pickups.. Anyway, going play my new toy..

Mahogany is definitely my body of choice on a Roscoe now!
Great for fretted and great for fretless!

.... and the Demeter is just made for Roscoe's with mahogany or ash bodies! :bassist:

Enjoy that One Jason! It is soooooo sweet!:)

.... a bit easy on the eyes too!;)

While I truly love the tone and playability of my Century Standard 5JJ..... I would like to add a fretted six to the arsenal. If you or anyone you know wants to trade a Roscoe 6 for a 5 let me know. Tried this with no luck in the classifieds. Just thought I would drop a line here to put the bug in someone's ear who might be interested.
