Strings question...
I've been using Sunbeams on my SKB 5 RMLE with Aguilar DCBs and OBP-3 preamp. They sound excellent to me. Now I'm thinking about trying Hi Beams. Anyone played Hi Beams with the DCB/OBP-3 combo?

Why am I considering? I gig religiously with my Roscoe. I've recently started also gigging with a Sadowsky Will Lee 4 (for drop D and slap songs) that's strung with stainless steels (blue). There's an obvious difference in brightness between the strings, so I'm thinking about trying Hi Beams on the Roscoe.

I use Sunbeams on my DCB equipped SKB. I don't think I would like anything brighter than that. Besides, I'm not a fan of how steel feels.

Last night, the main sound guy from our church came to our campus to check out the sound. He told our local sound guy that the bass sounded the best he had ever heard from this campus. Yeah, that was a Roscoe LG3005. Boom!

Still looking for another Roscoe if some of you Roscoe hoarders want to trade for my DP Custom 6 plus cash hit me up. I am down to only using my Warrior (Endorsed back in the day) and my two Roscoes, mainly using the LG 3005.

The Demeter is one of the only onboard preamps that I haven't tried but from all indications it seems like it's a very bright one which to me doesn't scream fretless. And I think you're right that the Roscoe Bart/NTMB seems like the way to go.

I am curious if anybody has paired the Pope with Roscoe Barts though.

I tried the Pope flex Core with Bart CB's (Roscoe LG-3006) and it sounded really good. Extremely versatile preamp. I suspect that it would sound equally good with the Roscoe Barts. Maybe a little more compressed sounding, which I might actually prefer. What you would lose though (with the Roscoe Barts) is the ability to run passive at a decent output level. The Roscoe Barts just don't work well passive.
In the end though my favorite tone is the Roscoe Barts or CB's with the Demeter preamp. The Pope can come close to that tone but lacks the glassy highs IMO. On the other hand, the passive tone control is really nice on the Pope.

I haven't tried Hi Beams, but I use stainless steel strings because they last longer, and that saves money in the long run.

I gigged both basses again last night. (Man, I really love the Roscoe... I never tire of saying that). I may experiment with Hi Beams eventually, but last night I just boosted the treble a little for more sparkle.

I urge to to try Dunlop SuperBright nickels

I just tried a set of the regular Dunlop nickel rounds on my Roscoe Bart bass and am very pleasantly surprised how bright, clear and focused they sound. They feel great also. I have always used DR nickel Lowriders, and really like the Sunbeams, but wanted to experiment a little. I have a set of the SuperBrights I will try next.

Easy answer on the fretless thing.

Get the Bart 3-band preamp.

Pickups: if you want a big fat round warm tone, get the custom wound Roscoe-Barts, if you want a more modern "Jaco on steroids" vibe, get the Bart J's in the "JB" locations.

Or, get CB's in the "JB" location.

I was a mouse click away from buying that one but just couldn't make it happen financially. Been looking for a 4 string Roscoe for about a year now, but a Century is probably more my speed and budget. That LG is so fantastic though, treat her right! If it doesn't work out between you two, let me know

Can someone compare the tone Aguilar DCB/OBP-3 to the Roscoe Bart/Demeter set-up? I briefly owned the Bart/Demeter set-up and really liked it.

I've been running DR Nickel Low Riders on my Century Standard which has a Aguilar OBP-1 preamp and Aguilar PJ pickups. Always sounded great. By mistake I order some DR Nickel Sunbeams. Well put them on tonight.....so far I like how they feel. True test this weekend with a handful of gigs coming up....so stay tuned!

One thing I must say about the Low Riders, I put them on back in November and they still are nice and bright (I guess wiping down my bass after each set helps, also I use that string cleaner gizmo that clean the strings and frets). I was reluctant to take off the Low Riders since they still sounded good....but been itching to give the Sunbeams a test drive.

Speaking of pickups...I have an old Roscoe 2005 fretless that has EMG DC140 soap bars. I really don't care for the EMG's. They're kind of sterile or thin soundings to my ear. I prefer a thicker, warmer sound. Any suggestions on replacements?

Bartolini and Aguilar both make versions of their soap bar pickups that will be direct replacement size/shape for the EMG's. We don't have any here in the shop (stopped using EMG's back in the 90's), but I have indeed seen them from both - I know that the Aguilar DCB G series pickups are intended for this purpose, I cannot be certain which Bart one is, but I know they have indeed done them.

Do you mean EMG 40DC soap bars? If so the EMG 40DC & 40CS soap bars are 4.0 X 1.5 and the Bart M45 series is also 4.0 X 1.5. That would certainly work.
