rosewood fingerboard edges.

E.. I used to play on a maple fretboard but I got a new 2009 MIA fender with a rosewood fingerboard. But when I slide my fingers along the edge of the fingerboard, I could feel the side of the frets which is usually covered by the finish on a maple fretboard. Is it common for rosewood fretboards??

And does anyone has any idea of how to take good care of rosewood fretboards? It seems that rosewood fretboard could easily accumulate dust...

BTW.. the toitose pickguard got a lot of scratches on it...OHH.... : ( .. Hope the scratched will go away if I tear down the plastic cover when I change my strings..

I think you're talking about fret sprout. Minor problem and can happen with maple too. The fret ends probably just need filed down a bit. Get yee to the local luthier.

And the pickguard is also called a scratch plate, if that gives you a clue about what is normal...

Are the "scratches and scars" just the wood grain?

All this is more or less normal, probably, but you could have a lemon. Post some good closeup pics and let somebody smarter than me have a look.

Thanks.. Well.. I could just feel the fret sprouts and they don't seem to be that bad..at least they don't cut my fingers..lol

and..well..I know what pickguard is for... I'm just a little disapointted since it's a new bass...anyways...thanks a lot~~!

I had the same problem on my '07 MIA. I was used to a Rick neck that was highly glossed and then a maple fretless, so the Fender rosewood was a bit rough to me, but precisely as you've explained.

I've since bought a MM StingRay and it's nothing like the Fender. Smooth as glass up and down the neck, top bottom and across the width. The rosewood is also about twice as thick as was on my P.

Might be QC or might be all of them, but it's pushed my away from Fender once again in my bass playing career.

Are you saying that you haven't taken the plastic off of the pickguard yet? If that's the case, you'll probably find that the pickguard itself is in pristine condition once you remove the plastic.
