In the beginning of this piece, should the 3 note figure be played on the d string, with an open D? And does anyone have advice as to how the bowing should be done? Is it a fast downbow, with a slow up bow, should I re take the bow after the up bow? Thanks in advance.

do you mean the triplet figure that is featured in the opening of this video at around 0:50? Link Removed


I'll be honest, I've never played this piece, but but the speed of it, and just quickly playing the figure on my bass, my first instinct would be to play it on the D string using that open D. I think it would be good for two reasons. one is that were I to be playing it, i think it is a more fleet fingering/bowing than involving a string crossing, and secondly the open D wil likely help to stabilize tuning.

As I said, I haven't played this piece before, So take this comment with a grain of salt, but I hope it helps.

I've always been of the opinion most composers would be happy as long as you played the right notes in the right rhythm at the right time.

So after working on it for a while, I am playing it on the open d, and playing a very fast down bow for the staccato note with a slower upbow on the tied notes. The challenge is to play them at the same volume, and pianissimo.
