I find the idea of a round core set of Pyramid Golds extremely tempting. If any of you order a set from Pyramid, PLEASE report back.
Still, I can't help feeling there must be a reason why Pyramid has decided to go with round core for the E-string and hex core for the rest. The Pyramid Gold sets are already pure PERFECTION for my taste. Especially the short scale sets. In fact, these are the ONLY bass strings where I actually find the short scale sets superior to the long scale sets. I've always found the "dead" E-string a bit too different to the rest of the strings with the long scale sets. It's extremely thumpy and can be muddy with some basses. Actually... perhaps a HEX core E-string could provide better balance for long scale?
Pyramid Golds may not be the most versatile strings out there and for some genres of music they can be close to useless but they have a truly unique tone/feel that I personally love. Very often I find that they work great in the mix although I didn't expect their unique tone to be "right" for that particular song.
Unlike most (or all?) other bass strings these strings were actually designed for short scale basses. Specifically for Höfners. Most (or all?) other bass strings seem to be designed for long scale and just cut down to short scale length. In most cases I hate the short scale sets even when I love the long scale sets. There are a couple of exceptions but not many. The selection of great short scale strings is extremely poor IMO. Rotosound's short scale strings are the absolutely worst. I find Roto short scale strings competely useless, even though I love their long scale strings. I honestly don't understand why they keep selling their junk short scale sets.
I've always suspected that the poor quality of most short scale strings is the reason why short scale basses have a reputation of being an "inferior" instruments (floppy E, etc). With a GOOD set of short scale strings a short scale bass can be just as good as a long scale bass. Different but equally good. With the increased popularity of short scale basses lately I'm surprised that most string manufacturers don't make make an effort to design GREAT short scale strings but keep selling the same old junk.
