Round string retainer question

A quick and probably obvious question -

I'm putting together a bass with a Fender-style headstock (as in, parallel to the fretboard), and I picked up a round string retainer (Invalid Link Removed).

Having never seen one of these things up close before, I assumed that it would have grooves on the underside to locate the strings, however it doesn't. Should I be filing grooves underneath or will the strings stay put as is?

strings will stay put as is, my am std Fender does not have grooves on the retainer either. However my Squier does... no difference whatsoever

Thanks for the reply. I'll leave it without grooves then, as it's probably easier on the strings.
