Rounds for a Squier Mustang Bass

In my extras box I found a new set of the old Fender 7150's with the gold silk (before D'Addario started making Fender strings). They were regular scale and after careful measuring only the E string would have any winding around the tuner post so I installed them. I've always liked these strings for a nice clear low end and they sound great so far on the 2020 Squier CV Mustang. I'll break them in and try them with the band before trying any others. These were my go to strings when I played regular scale Fenders. Great posts in this thread so far!

The Squier CV Mustang and Squier Musicmaster are stock parts and do sit much deeper in the ferrules than the ones that came with the Squier Musicmaster bridge that I installed on my '78 Musicmaster. Interesting, never paid much attention before to that detail.

Thanks for posting the pix. On the instrument that appears to have the longest distance from the ball to the bridge saddle (since the scale length is the same on all three instruments), keeping in mind both the ferrule depth and the distance from the top hole to the crown of the bridge saddle, would you consider making a sharpie mark on a string on the tuner side of the nut, take the string off, measure it from the ball to the sharpie mark, and post your measurement? I want to know the exact measurement instead of all the...um...let's just say "indeterminate" verbiage that I have seen in a couple hours of searching threads and the internet generally since the OP posted this thread. Since I am from the "Show Me" state, and the modern interpretation of that is, "Put your money where your mouth is," I will offer that if the string breaks or dies while doing this, I will purchase for you a replacement string and mail it to you at my expense, since it is to my benefit that I am asking you to do this. Thanks.

I labelled the basses in the photos so let me know which one by name you're talking about. And once I know that, does it matter which string? Just to get this right.

Since I didn't see the front of the instruments, probably the Mustang that has a vintage style bridge will have the bridge saddles farthest from where the strings go through the body. It doesn't matter which saddle, as they are compensated and scale is the same.

Ok, I'm with ya now. Looking at the front of these two I'd say you're right the Mustang would be farthest. I'll get back to you when I have a measurement.

Ok, had a long phone call with my sister so sat on the floor and got the measurement for you.

On the Mustang I took off the G string. I knew that tuner needed some tightening anyway. From the ball end to the mark I put on the tuner side of the nut was 32 and 1/4 inches.

PERFECT!!! Thanks. GHS short scale strings, including my favorite Balanced Pure Nickels, God's gift to short scale bass players, are 32 3/4 inches of wound length. They should fit just fine, indeed!

Excellent, glad it helped. It was convenient to be on the Mustang since I wanted to address that tuner anyway.

It is amazing how different the measurements can be from one manufacturer to another. The D'addario's I've been using have to be medium scale or the silk hangs over the nut.

Ended up switching back to GHS flats for now - still trying to find the right sound so this bass will be used in different applications from my other bass!
