If you want the classic rich 60’s tone as featured on thousands of songs go for an alder body with a rosewood fretboard. Either flatwounds or rounds with the tone turned down. For slightly spankier 70’s tone go for an ash body with maple board. Once you get above $500 or so the brand is not so important. As mentioned, the P tone seems to be baked into the pickup configuration. Wide flat coils vs the Jazz with narrower tall coils.

I don't know. I stopped looking after I bought my Mike Lull PJ5, with Duncan's and TI flats.

Good thing it's not ginger coloured, as based on one ginger royal, I'd say it's tone would be whiney.
