I tried a set of oversize strap buttons and they have become my favorite strap retaining method. Like the washers they require you leave the strap attached for best results, but they are very effective at retaining your strap.

Rubber Strap Locks: Anyone Ever Used These

as a couple folks have mentioned they might not work so well with extra-thick straps or certain strap button shapes.
i'm not a fan of those thick straps for this among other reasons, and so far the best buttons for the washers seem to be the gibson-style with the curved back flange. they seem to present a flatter bearing surface for the washer instead of said washer being pushed halfway up a cone like with the fender-style buttons.
i like the raw brass ones, a little rougher surface for the washers to hang onto.
