Marcus Miller. I am not a huge fan of slap, but I gotta give the guy props. He took what Larry G. did and really honed the technical aspect to near perfection. Where Larry was just raw energy, Marcus was finesse.

Percy Jones and Mick Karn were pioneers in my book...

Mick Karn- he truly was one of a kind and doesn't really get his due in mainstream. He had a unique voice in everything he played and it always came through.

Actually Paul McCartney and George Martin were pioneers in bringing the bass out front and louder in the mix of “modern” music. Real rule breakers!
McCartney played guitar before he reluctantly became the bass player so he improvised runs and made the bass guitar an equal partner to the guitars. He wanted to be upfront in the band so he played as an equal to the others. Many bands place the bass player as a backup support to the song...not an equal.

Not to minimize their impact, but as I understand it, they were trying to emulate the Motown bass sound.
