Running the sound and playing

As in a post before, I run my own sound, but I use a programmable mixer with scene memory (the Yamaha 01v). So tweaks are very minor from location to location since it is dialed in.

Proper gain structuring of the system, matching mics and isolated drums (shield or electronic). That cover many of the problems.

I do it. It's a challenge if you don't have time for a sound check. For some reason, people seem to think it's cool to tell me about issues during a song, so I have a rule. Don't tell me about it until the song's over. It's a real distraction to have the singer yelling, "I can't hear myself in the monitors!" during a song. Usually I have things sorted out by the third song. You've got to have a wireless so you can go out front once.

I agree with Munj, except the "go out front once" part...

I go out front at least twice per set, fine tuning the mix. During break - listen to comments from audience members with "trusted" ears. Usually they tell me that my band sounds fantastic. I'd rather hear that, than "Your solo was amazing".
