Rustling noise out of A string

I am having a weird noise coming out of my A string. Sounds like a spring playing along my string. In the link (or file) you can hear me repeating the open E, G, A . I believe you can hear that noise when the A comes in.
My bass is a G&L L2500 tribute (indonesian). I 've come across the same issue for some years and I believe once it was my E string that had the noise. Any ideas on how to fix it?
I've tried to lower/raise the bridge action of this string but the noise stayed. And I rule out a fret issue since i hear it even on open string and my action is prety high.

How much of a break angle does the A string have on the headstock side of the nut? I've heard that "hissing" type sound when I cut the string too short accidentally and didn't have enough windings on the peg to get the break angle low enough.

This bass has a string retainer for A and E strings so I was hoping it does the job of keeping the right angle. I will try and keep my string longer to get more winds on the peg.

Could be the string. Whenever I've had that issue, I check that all screws and nuts are tight--on the back too!--but usually end up changing the string. That solves it most of the time. Only time I remember it being a hardware issue was with a floyd rose locking nut on guitar. After 15 years, the strings wore slight groves into it and one string wouldn't sit properly even when clamped. So I replaced the nut. I imagine there are pre-slotted replacement nuts that you could swap on the G&L, if that's the issue. Or you could try filing the slot a little (very little).

Have you checked for loose springs on the intonation screws? You can check by pressing down on them down with your finger and playing open strings.

If it goes away you can try to spin em a little if that doesn't work remove the barrel and stretch the spring a bit. You could also check to make sure tuner screws are snug.

And what if the set has a string like that? Do you go and buy a new one? That sound expensive :(

If you have a string retainer for the A string, maybe that isn't an issue. Can we get some pics? What kind of bass is this? The more information, the more helpful people can be. :)
Its a G&L L2500 Tribute. The headstock is this. I'd like to update that I changed the A string with an old one (same gauge and type and almost the same tunepeg winding turns) and the rattling is gone. Weird. Why would a string behave like that? It's not that its ONE string. I've come across several times throughout the years. Do I have to buy a new set everytime this might happen?

A lot of places sell singles. juststrings, stringsbymail, etc. Though every time I've had that issue, I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a new string. :) Occasionally you get a lemon and/or unintended user error. Some strings are just finicky. I believe it's the wrap coming loose from the core at some point. If you use bass strings that don't have that fabric wrapping at the tuner end, then it's recommended you put a 90º bend before cutting. (Maybe that's recommended either way?)

If you think the string itself may be the issue, contact the manufacturer's customer service and let them know. I've had several bass string makers send singles as replacements. It's good public relations on their part.

Could also be the string "twisted" a hair when you were installing it.

Those are some good advices. I always bend the string before cutting. That "twist" is something new to me. I'll have this in mind in the next new set. I hardly believe I would ever get a replacement string since I live in Greece, but I'll try if it happens again. Though this would mean that I should buy some spare sets in case I need to play and a bad string comes up.
