Sad Day. Atkinson closes shop.

Dan,
Hopefully your new direction of being "less custom" but still high quality will yield you a better profit/peace ratio. Best of luck with your business and thanks for not completely throwing in the towel. I have been hunting down a nice P. You will probably hear from me come spring. Cheers.

I will probably never build a bass for anyone else, to their specs solely because certain folks can be very particular in what they want. I respect that, but have also read all the horror stories from custom builders and want to avoid that shiite.

So, I build whatever my little brain thinks up, or franken mod existing parts to get from A to B. Then if I don't like it, don't play it or hear someone asking for similar, I sell it as a used bass and describe exactly what it is. No embellishment, not warranty no returns.

Worked so far I have built/modded/sold somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen bases all to good reviews!

As to Dan's decision, it was his to make and the world will be one less custom bass builder/ assembler for it.

Sad to see this though...

FYI, still not doing custom orders, but I'm now offering finished basses for sale on my website.

I think that's a great approach for you Dan. Build what you want and offer it for sale at a set price on your site. No fuss, no muss and it lets you continue to indulge in the rewarding parts of bass building.

Speaking of Stambaugh, what happened to his website?

It was hacked but is back up and running now and it looks like he's added some "Build of the Month" basses to try and get closer to being up to date.

Wow, that's too bad. I hope other builders on here don't get discouraged. I never owned any Atkinson basses, but Dan is fairly knowledgable. Atkinson basses seem to have a "new vintage" vibe, while Kallas basses are more of the "NOS/Closet Classic/Time Machine" (which speaks to me the most), and Nash does the relic vintage basses. They each seem to occupy a unique niche and it gave us a lot of choices for custom builds, it's really a shame. :( But I hope this new direction that Dan has chosen will indeed allow him to churn out even better builds and continue his passion. Wish you the best.

When you undervalue your time eventually you'll get burned out.

imho he should have charged more.

I agree. He makes a very nice product from what I`ve seen on here. The thing that REALLY burned me was the guy who did a custom order, then demanded a full refund due to a finish blemish rather than allow Dan to refinish it. Dan posted it up on Ebay and sold it for a loss. A few months later, who just happens to post pics of it here ? The original buyer; claimed his friend won the bid on Ebay - what a coincidence ! - and he bought it from the friend. I too wish Dan well - and I STILL plan to snag one of his basses one day !

Honestly, Dan sold it for that price on eBay. I do not feel sorry for him selling it at that cost. I'm pretty sure he's not asking for sympathy. The buyer had all the right to buy it on eBay as much as any bidder on eBay.

Did you read the entire thread? Did you read the part where the buyer demeaned and insulted Atkinson, over the same bass he previously gushed with praise. Did you read the part where the buyer tried to sell that bass here, and quickly deleted the for-sale thread when Atkinson caught him? How about the buyer scratching the name off the headstock? Did you read that?
