Sadowsky build questions

Currently waiting for my NYC Sadowsky and as usual the time quote was 6 months. I am assuming much of the time is due to backlog but I was wondering, how long does it take to build the instrument?

The 6 months should take me to mid/late April (getting close). At what point should I expect a firmer ETA on my order from Kevin or does the magic email just arrive one fine day? Should I expect any progress status emails from Sadowsky?

Just looking for info from those who have waited before. Don't want to harass them unnecessarily (however, maybe I get a small amount of harassement in the price :)).

Congratulations on being in the "waiting for my NYC" club. I was there for quite a while. I ordered on May 1, 2006. I got a message from Kevin and a message from Nino on the day it shipped, October 9, 2006. I got the bass on the 11th.

About harrassment, I always tried to bug them as little as possible, but there was the time when I changed my mind about the fingerboard wood. I had come across some sound clips that convinced me I needed Brazilian Rosewood instead of Ebony. I contacted Kevin by email and by phone. He was able to OK the order because a neck hadn't been ordered from the fabricators yet. Other than that, after I got the order worked out with Kevin, I didn't bug them. However, my wife is in New York a lot, and one day decided to go visit. She really dug the place, and people were really nice to her. :cool: :cool: :cool:

I'm not able to comment on their build practices and times, but there are those on TB who know quite a bit about this. I feel very confident that you will be happy with your instrument. I love playing mine just as much now as I did the day it arrived. Obviously there are many fine builders out there, but there really is something quite special about my Sadowsky! :D :D :D

I am also waiting for an NYC. I placed my order on January 9th, so I have quite a bit to go.

The way I look at it though, it's ready when it's ready. I trust (and know) that it will be well worth the wait, not to mention I've read about some guys here who've waited far longer for their custom to be completed.

Hi Rob,
Without commenting on Roger's process specifically, a high-end jazz bass can often be "built" in a matter of days. However, as you indicated, a LOT of the wait time comes from the backlog that many builders have to deal with....just getting all of the projects in front of yours done so that attention can be given to YOUR bass.
Also, you will need to factor in time for body and neck prep, paint, parts to be shipped from the parts supplier, the person who does the paintwork, etc. If you rely on outside suppliers (pickups, hardware, paint, parts, case manufacturer, etc.) any hang-up with any of these companies can put things well behind schedule.

Im in wait mode myself. Ordered mid Jan. I ordered one time before but a couple months in a similar bass appeared on the "in stock" page and I grabbed it. Like JPJ said, you are in the pipeline and are waiting for the wood to arrive, paint work, neck shaping/sanding, etc, etc. Assembly doesnt take long. The rest does, though

Hi and thanks so much . . those are the best source I can find so far. Won't tell me what a Sadowsky will sound like but they do show some differences in tone.

The alder/rosewood sounds much 'sweeter/muddier' than the other two.
I found it harder to split ash/maple and alder/ebony (being totally honest).

I didn't find anything in there to put me off an ebony boarded Sad on either alder or ash. I think I liked the GS5 with ebony the best.

Ha .. I only added 'muddy' for the effect!
'Sweet' and 'warm' seem to be the norm for alder/rosewood.
I have a CIJ '62 Fender Jazz and to me that defines those adjectives and provides my reference point.

I'm looking forward to playing an ebony board and those clips may be the last chance I had to change my mind.
