Sadowsky Pickups?

We just recently got a Sadowsky J-5 (trade-in) in the store where I work, and while it's easily the best bass I've ever played I can't justify the 3000$ CAD price tag (even though I know that's the best deal I'll ever see on one, where's the lottery when I need it?)

So, the question I have is: What pickups does Roger use in these amazing basses? I know of the legendary Sadowsky Pre now, but what pickups drive that thing? They are the most balanced I've ever heard, although that may be a function of the pre-amp.

So, if anyone can give me some direction that would be great. And, if it's all pre, can a mere mortal like myself get one, or are they only in the basses, not seperate. Just that I've got a Modulus Genesis 5 I'd like to think about upgrading. :smug:

another $250 for the preamp with VTC

or you can drop $99 for an Aguilar OBP-1 at BestBassGear (a TB sponsor!), add in $25 or so for pots, wires, solder, and a cap ... and do it yourself for less than half the cost

all the best,

I had a 70's UltraVintage 5 and original humcancelling pickups which I believe where Dimarzio Split coils.I complained to Roger that the A string sounded dead and muted and he told me there was a slight Phase problem with split coils so he gave me a choice of replacing them with Stacked coils or single coils.I went with the stacked coils but not soon after it I sold the bass.So I guess you could say there is possibly three choices of Sadowsky pickups for 5 Stringers.

hmmm....interesting. Is the Aguilar THAT close to the Sadowsky with VTC? I had the orginal Sadowsky preamp in my Metro and although it was good, it was too bright for me. I added the VTC and MAN what a difference. I hear alot of people saying that the Aguilar is essentially the same as the Sadowsky preamp, I just haven't heard if that is with OR without the VTC.

I'd definitely be open for a less expensive solution if I can get the same sound as the VTC with Humcancelling Pickups.

Anyone have experience with this?

How is the noise on the Single Coils? I've seriously considered getting the SC instead of humbuckers, but I don't want to deal with a lot of excess noise.

I've heard from other Sadowsky players with single coils that thanks to the great shielding job the noise is minimal. I'll tell you when I get my new SC Sad and compare it to my HC Sad.
