if 'J' is one and 'P' is one hundred, with the middle position being fifty, I thought there was a continuous change as you move away from any one of those three positions, but with mine (sadowsky 4) if I move 1/16 away from fifty toward 'P' it's already 80!
i'm inexperienced, (a painter who always wanted to play bass) - am i wrong in thinking it's like a rheostat with a coninuous sweep.

You've come across the main issue with passive blend pots... they don't really do a good job of 'blending' the pickups, IME, anad the differences in the 'between' positions are extremely subtle at best. I'd venture that the 1/16 shift off-center caused the sound to pretty much jump all the way to P-pup land, though the there may be a slight little tonal difference before you max it out in one direction.

Active blends (e.g. EMG electronics) or 'buffered' blends typically operate more like a rheostat and allow you to dial in different tones between pickups. I'd personally love to hear of a passive blend pot that allowed this, but have never come across one, hence I generally modify my instruments with a pickup selector.

I'd suggest adjusting the height of the pickups, maybe you need to raise the J pickup/lower the P so that the volume is more even when you favor one over the other.

you guys have me thinking about something to improve the situation...can you tell me what the taper and value of the blend pot is, please?

I think some clever applications of stock resistors may help the situation...but I need info to do the calcs...
