Sadowsky Pre-Amp?

Hey guys i was wondering how much it would cost to upgrade the preamp in my fender MM4 to a sadowsky preamp.

would such an upgrade be worth it? should i upgrade the pups too?

Nat, you might want to look at scoring a used outboard Sadowsky pre, so you can use it with all your basses.

Otherwise, my guess is you could do it for under $200. What kind of pickups are you considering?

It'd depend on whether or not you'd send your bass to the Sadowsky shop to do the installation.

If you do it yourself, you might save some money; but you'd have to feel comfortable with your skills. :D

haha i've never played around with the internals on any of my basses.

i thought maybe an installed sadowsky preamp in my fender jazz would be a sort of cheap alternative to a sadowsky

I have two basses with Sadowsky guts... Those basses do not sound quite like my Sadowskys. It's a cheap alternative, but might not even get you to 3rd base.

I think the Pre with VTC is $250 uninstalled.

I'm thinking a mod is going to move this to a different forum soon.

oh my bad..i thought this fit here since it deals with how a certain bass would sound with "x" in it...sorry

Don't say sorry to me. I really don't care. Personally I like it when threads are misplaced because I get curious about other things that I wouldn't ordinarily be looking at.

Good luck with the pre. How about adding sadowsky singles, or Nordie NJ4 singles.... I bet that would be very aggressive. (and quite a lot of money)

I did exactly this and had it done by the Sadowsky shop. They installed the Humcancelling PUPS and added an onboard pre with the VTC. Not including the shipping (both ways) it cost me:

$250.00 for the Pre with VTC
$140.00 for the Humcancelling PUPS
I believe the labor was around $75

Shipping is around $35-$40 each way so you do the math...

I HIGHLY recommend you let them do it unless you are VERY comfortable working on your own gear. I am comfortable but it is relatively inexpensive considering these are the same guys who build Sadowsky gear all day every day!!! Do what I did and call Kevin Drexler and let him give you a quote and you'll know to the penny (or pretty close ;) ) what it would run you....They are great guys to deal with and i wouldn't send my stuff anywhere else!! For what it's worth I think it was well worth the hassle but I have since gotten my own UV70 and sold my Sadowsky modded MM4....Good Luck and let us know what you do...

Peace,

T

I took my Am JBass and added a BA III and Nordy PUPs that alone make a world of difference. Later I had my luthier (who Sadowsky recommeded) install the pre-amp with the VTC. The bass sounds great I can dial in just about any sound I need. The VTC is a must IMO because I do play passive quite a bit so nice to still have a tone control.

I might change the PUPs again to some with raised A and D pole pieces.

i'm really not sure if i even wanna have work done on the bass after playing it just now...it sounds so good for the $600 spent on it...tough decisions! the next influx of money will probably be in the summer..so i have time to decide...

btw, does the pickguard on the bass make any difference in the sound? For example, would it resonate the tone more around the pick up??
