Sadowsky Preamp?

Trust me, the volume knob on the Sadowsky pre is not your problem. That preamp, when run correctly, is not that hot. If you have a onboard preamp that you have to turn the volume control down in order to get a clean signal out of your amp... something is wrong.

I run my Sadowsky pre volume all the way open into the passive preamp of every amp that I own, and even when POUNDING on the B string, the preamps are clean as a whistle.

Again, it seems you were misunderstanding the 'boost only' nature of the pre. I'm sure when you turn those tone contols down somewhat, you will not only fix your problem, but that bass will sound A LOT better:)
