Safety razors?

DR Harris makes my absolute favorite creams, mass-produced or otherwise. Truly fantastic stuff! I would recommend it to everyone. :)

I'm not a big fan of their soaps, but I love the fact that they are one of the last of the 100+ year old British houses to still produce a good tallow-based formula. Geo F. Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, and a few others, have reformulated their soaps into crap over the past 5 years or so, but DR Harris still makes a good, easy to lather soap.

As a side note, the fragrances that DR Harris offers vary a bit, depending on which product you buy. In particular, their almond cream is of the "sweet marzipan" variety, whereas their almond soap has a dry almond flower scent. Likewise, Marlborough cream is quite a bit warmer and less smokey than Marlborough soap and aftershave. To my nose, Windsor cream, soap, and aftershave all pretty much smell the same, but with different intensities.

I love DR Harris, have you try the body wash or soap? They are quite expensive and I wonder if they worth it, another great aftershave is Floid, love it.

Right now I use a Mach3, which does the job for the most part, but I left that in Pensacola and won't have it for a few weeks. So what can you tell me about safety razors? How do they compare to cartridges? Would you recommend one over the other?

Edit: I also realize that it would just make more sense if I pick up a pack of disposable razors for the next few weeks, which I'll probably end up doing. I'm still curious about safety razors though.

I've been using a safety razor for 30 years. Up until last year I used my Grandfather's Gillette. Unfortunately the threads broke, so I now use a no-name brand one.
I love it. I have a relatively thick and coarse beard. The safety razor makes quick work of it, and I get a very smooth and close shave.
I tend to use the same blade 4 times. Twice on each side. They are VERY cheap, especially compared to the Mach 3 and anything else that is similar.

You CAN nick yourself, but you can also nick yourself with a Mach 3. It's called a safety razor for a reason. It was the predecessor to the straight razor
which is definitely NOT a safety razor.

There are several stores dedicated strictly to men's shaving needs. I can recommend one if you like. I just use the products from one company and
I have to say it was the best shaving soap I've ever used.

That leads me to the fact that sometimes it is hard to find the safety razor blades. I use the soap that you put on with a brush and that's hard to find
sometimes, as well. Online though, you can find anything.

I haven't tried them, but a lot of artisan soapmakers sell bath soap and shampoo bars for little money.

Whenever someone asks this question on a shaving forum, a healthy number of people say that preshave products are useless, and you can get the same/better results by washing and hydrating your face before shaving. (Preferably by showering.)

I scored a Microtouch safety razor - the TV brand product. Refills are stupid cheap!

Two things I can confidently say you will get out of buying one.

1) Best shave of your life.
2) Worst cuts of your life.

Overall, totally worth it. My fiancée loves stealing my blade to shave her legs.

Go for it! Find the right blades for you, and they work very well. I recommend safety razors made by Merkur. Just don't buy that piece of crap, Micro Touch One, that's being pushed on TV right now.

If you want to stay with a more modern style cartridge razor, I recommend you check out Harry's (Invalid Link Removed). Excellent quality, and a much better price than the stuff you find at the big box stores.

The shop who's products I like is called "The Art of Shaving".
I liked their pre-shave oil, and their shaving soap is the best I've ever used. They also have a nice after shave that does not smell much and that does not sting. I usually neve use pre-shave it after shave, but I really like theirs.

Regarding if pre-shave oil is necessary I would consider that whenever I've gotten a straight razor shave at the barber shop they always use it. That and got towels and got shaving soap. There's something to be said for that.
