Saint Anger, 10 years later

Well, ten years ago I was a teenager and much more interested in Metallica in general, but I'd say it holds up. The running joke that I always hear and echo is the irony of spending millions of dollars on an album to try and get a garage band sound. Did get one pretty cool documentary out of it, though.

Still by far their weakest, and not particularly good in general. However, I really dug that they bundled the CD (or at least the version I bought) with a DVD of them playing the entire album at their practice space. I thought that was very cool, and the songs sound much better in that environment.

I love it, I didn't care for it when it dropped initially (NO SOLOS??!!?? I was also 16 so keep that in mind) but a few years later a buddy and I listened to it without having the notions of it being a Metallica album and it is great. When they drop the beat in Frantic is one of my favourite parts of the record. Still gets me every time. I love some sludge.

Metallica is a band that catches HUGE flack from their fan base for attempting to do ANYTHING different. The fans turned on them after the black album and after St.Anger, their two biggest changes in sound.

I thought it was very refreshing to see something somewhat unique come out of Metallica and that is exactly what St.Anger was. Personally I preferred when Metallica stole Dave Mustaine's style instead of Pepper Keenan's style but St.Anger was so different from both of their respective styles. For those unfamiliar with Pepper check out his work with C(orrosion)o(f)C(onformity), you will see how big of an impact they had on Metallica in the 90's. We all know how much of an impact Dave had on them in the 80's.

Sadly Metallica then caved to the fans again and made Death Magnetic, which was a good comeback to thrash but it still doesn't hold a candle to Megadeth's thrash comeback record (The System Has Failed). Don't get me started on the mixing of Death Magnetic.

I remember when it came out... ...actually I remember all of them coming out. I started listening to Metallica's Whiplash casset a few months before Ride the Lightening came out. I even got to seem them (with Cliff) as an opening band for Ozzy. Ultimate Sin + Master of Puppets. Odd combo but a great concert.


Anyway...
After Load and "Load of S***" came out I though St. Anger was great because they got some their balls back that they lost during the eyeliner days. Was it a good album? Not really but it gave me hope. To be honest I didn't really pay much attention to them since the black album.

So...
Kill 'em all - Angry kids
Lightening - Band puberty (Kids growing up)
Puppets - Holy Crap! METALLICA is Friggin cool!!!
Justice - Maybe I should learn to play drums? (Seriously even the hip hop guys were bumping this disc)
Black - That's different for them, but even my thrash mindset couldn't deny that those songs are actually really good
All of that other stuff - Not completely terrible, but not Metallica for me
Magnettic - Oooooh..... there they are.

So there's my opinions on Metallica

How many songs from that album are in their setlist today? I can't imagine many.

Their weakest album by far. Everyone talks about the drum sound, but what about Hetfield's vocals? Awful. The songs are boring and way too long. I sold this CD a few months after I bought it.

Years ago, one of our local classic rock stations used to spin an occasional cut off of Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets. The station went on a long slide into mediocrity and by the time the station was re-booted into Lite Rock, they were playing tons of songs off of Load. There are so many great songs out there, why would anyone really need to hear Memory Remains more than once a year nowadays?

Pssshh... you have no idea. My local "rock" station plays Hero of the Day... REGULARLY! Every time it plays I wonder if there is anybody actually enjoying that pile of ****.
