Just getting started on this piece. Is it ok to do a glissando on the A string for the scalar phrase? Thanks

By 'scalar phrase' I assume you mean the triplets. Eventhough they are to be played legato, they still have to be rhythmic in which case, you will have to throw some fingers down rather than just slide up and down the string with a single finger. Practice with a metronome and try to keep your left hand relaxed as you play.

you'll enjoy the result more if you do it the right way, as well. This whole suite is a lot of fun. "Tortoises" is probably one of my favourites.

I 'wiggle' my fingers, get to the E in time and then back down to the A in time, all on the A string. It really doesn't matter here because if it sounds like a lion roaring then you've done the job! The more important factors are the cresc./dim (try up-down if you can't get enough all in one down bow), a gritty bow sound and the legato.
